C. Presentation of the lesson

Yesterday I told you to read the story

Thank you Ma’am by Langston Hughes.
Today we will be discussing the elements
of that short story.

Take note class that we have 5 basic

elements of a short story, those are
Characters, Setting, Problem or Conflict,
Resolution, and Theme/Message.

I will discuss to you the first element of a

short story and that is Character, and to
explain to you what a Character is, A
character can be a person, animal, being,
creature, or thing in a story. Writers use
characters to perform the speak dialogue,
moving the story along a plotline.
Now, there are two types of Major
characters in a story. The Protagonist and
The Antagonist, when we talk about the
Protagonist, This is the main character,
around which the whole story revolves.
The main character or the Protagonist can
also be considered as the hero of the
story. The decisions made by this
character will be affected by a conflict from
within or as we call it as the Internal
conflict, or the conflict that happens within
man vs. himself. There is also external
conflict that happens between man vs.
another character, or it can also be a
conflict between man and nature,
technology, society, or the fates/God.

Now that you know what a Character is, I think the characters in the story of Thank

Hughes?

Okay that’s amazing, Thank you. The Protagonist in the story is Roger, and

the story? Who is the protagonist and Who
is the Antagonist in the story? Mrs. Jones is the antagonist because she
stops Roger from stealing from her. In this
How did Mrs. Jones became the case, the antagonist is a good person who

That’s a great analogy. Thank you for your

answer.

Now that you know the characters in the

story, the second element that you have to
learn is the Setting. What is a setting? The
Setting is the time and place or when and
where of the story. The setting may also
include the environment of the story, which
can be made up of the physical location,
climate, weather, or social and cultural
surroundings. There are various ways that
time and place indicate setting. Time can
cover many areas, such as the character’s
time of life from their birth up to the
present. It can also include the time of day,
time of year, time period such as the past,
present, or future, etc. The setting in the story of Thank you
Ma’am took place in Harlem, which is a

of Thank you Ma’am?

Very good! Thank you for your answer.

The third element of a short story is the

problem or conflict .Conflict is the primary I think that the conflict in the story is that
problem that the characters in a story face. Roger is too poor to buy himself a pair of

nothing to overcome, there is nothing to
look forward to. Conflict in a story creates
and drives the plot forward. It reveals
opposing beliefs and truths about life and
It entertains by creating relatable contexts
in emotional, dangerous, exciting ways.

Now, how will you find conflict in a story?

We need to identify what or who is coming

between the protagonist and his goal. If
the goal is to get somewhere, and there is
a huge storm, then it's a conflict. If the goal I think that the conflict in the story is that
is to get a person to fall in love with him, Roger is too poor to buy himself a pair of

Mrs. Jones' purse. He fails, and is unsure
Alright, now, can someone tell me what is whether to trust that Mrs. Jones will not
the conflict of Thank You Ma’am? take him to the police.

Excellent! You figured that out fast.

Now, we’ll be moving to the next element.

The fourth one is the resolution of the
short story. The resolution is the end of the
story. It occurs after the plot. It is when you
learn what happens to the characters after
the conflict is resolved. The resolution is
also known as the denouement and it is
the conclusion of the story’s plot. It’s
where any unanswered questions are
answered. But why is it important?
Because this element points in the plot
and offers a solution to the central conflict I think it is when Mrs. Jones, who has
introduced in the beginning of the story. taken Roger home with her, fed, and

can buy the blue suede shoes he desires.
So can someone tell me what is there Ms. Jones also gives the boy room to

understand the meaning of responsibility
for his own actions.

Exactly right! Thank you for answering

that.

Now, we’ll be having the last one which is

the theme or message of the short story.
So, it is the message the writer is trying to
convey through the story. Often the theme
of a story is a broad message about life.
The theme of a story is important because
a story’s theme is part of the reason why
the author wrote the story. The author has I think the message of the story is all about
a message he wants to share with kindness Ma’am. The story shows how a

you think is the message or theme of
Thank You Ma’am?

Very good! Indeed! Now that we learned

the five (5) basic elements of a short
story…
