What factors or indicators would you consider to maintain and contain healthy social
literacy among your students?
Proper language use is one of the factors that I will consider to maintain and contain
healthy social literacy among my students. Language is what we use to communicate
with one another. Therefore, it is essential for us to maintain a proper language use to
avoid profanity or harsh words. In this way of using proper language, we could practice
kindness and have a harmonious relationship inside the classroom. Words cut deeper than
a knife, so as a teacher, we should always be careful in uttering words that might stain
our students’ mental health.
Use phrases of praise for students to help them feel good about themselves. In this way,
we are encouraging them to improve their learning and recite more often. Also, this will
help us to have a better relationship with them. But we need also to know how to praise a
student effectively first. I have read an article saying that we should use " I " to express
our compliments to our students. For example, “I am so impressed at how hard you
worked on this performance task’’. ‘’I’’ statement shows more sincerity and appreciation.
Teachers should ‘’praise the process and progress, not just the outcome.’’ This is
beneficial for students’ motivation and interest inside the classroom. Furthermore, this
will also affect other students that if one of them is getting praised/complimented, they
will also improve or do something to have a compliment from their teacher.
Encourage students to use media properly. We all know that media has beneficial
impact to students. A lot of different information are on media, and by the use of social
media, we can access information efficiently. Let us help our students to use social media
platforms and other websites safely, responsibly, and properly. Using social media
platforms, we can share our thoughts and read posts that can help us analyze and think
outside the box. Social media platforms are now part of our daily lives that could build
relationship that will surely connect and maintain each other’s relationship.

2. What principles or theories in social interaction would you highlight in class to make sure
that you demonstrate skills on developing social literacy?
I will highlight this in class, ‘’communicate clearly and listen carefully’’. Communicating
clearly and listening carefully means that you are interested in one’s thought and feeling.
It also means that you are respecting them (whether you are a teacher or a student) and
you are indulging yourself to create a good relationship with one another. This will also
result to an effective communication wherein a teacher and a student will meet the needs
of each other. Asking questions, sharing ideas or sharing stories are kinds of
communication that can make a relationship of students-to-students and teacher-to-
students improve. Good communication and listening attentively plays an important role
on developing social literacy among students.
