ANATOMY OF HOAX

1) List the feature/s that made it believable for people.

- Quick judgement
- Influence of other people’s reaction
- The timely posting of the news that made people react quickly
- The source of the news was a former news reporter that made people believe quickly

2) Identify how the given sample was proven as fake or a hoax after.
- The said news was proven fake when a concerned person took a chance to fact check and
see if the picture is true and was taken during the SEA games 2019, apparently it wasn’t,
it is proven that the picture used in the viral news was took in Hong Kong for a different
event, quick on their feet was ABS-CBN news to clarify the situation and released a
statement and proof that the picture used in the statement was fake and was used to fool
people to criticize the event more. They also stated that the person responsible for such
news was a former DZMM reporter that is no longer working for them. They stated that
ABS-CBN News has social media guidelines and gatekeeping layers to prevent erroneous
and misleading posts. Mr. Velasco’s post did not go through any of these processes.

3) Reflect and provide a specific way on how to avoid falling for a similar hoax or fake
in the future.
- Different kinds of news is growing rapidly throughout the world because of the
advancement of medium that we can use to deliver and gather information also known as
digital technologies. It seems that fake news or the news that consist of deliberate
information are also growing quickly in this digital world. Spreading via traditional and
online social media. There are several specific ways to avoid falling and for a similar
hoax or fake news in the future. First, it is important to evaluate the source. Evaluate the
Currency, “is the information currently happening?” Relevance, “is the information is to
studies?” Accuracy, “is the information is supported by evidences? and Authority of the
news. Second, we as a netizen, it is important to get a news from news sources. This is
one of the easiest way to avoid the trap from fake news. Lastly, distinguish opinion from
a fact. We should know the difference between opinion and fact. Opinion shows many
times now dominating cable news sources but the important is we should look in a fact to
avoid falling in a hoax or fake in the future.
