Post-Truth
We find the lines blurred between fact and fiction, between news reports and advertisements.
We are accustomed to hearing and reading fake news. We are inundated by figures and statistics
that we can barely comprehend, much less confirm. We are told to consider alternative facts and
to not take seriously everything we might hear our political leaders say. We read and revel in and
then repost the most hyperbolic and hysterical statements without asking ourselves whether we
or anyone else should reasonably maintain this. We are now in the “posttruth” era.

This label of “post-truth” means that we are more and more becoming habituated to disregard or
at least to devalue the truth. It is a tendency to think of truth as insignificant in view of other
concerns. This is a significant question in the field of media ethics, as practitioners in that field-
(news reporters, writers, investigative journalists, and advertisers)-ought to ask the question as to
what extent the integrity of their work might be compromised in view of other interests, such as
popularity, profit, higher viewership, or stronger sales. Yet, this issue is not limited to people
working in the media. It should be recognized as relevant by anyone who makes use of social
media, caught up in statements and exchanges of dubious worth. It should be considered by
anyone who wants to take Aquinas' claim seriously that reason and a concern for truth are what
make us human.

I. Go online and look for an instance of what might be “fake news.” See whether you
are able to determine the veracity of the news report. Detail your findings and opinion
below.
According to my research, The fake news that caught my attention is all
about election 2022. It is published October 24, 2021. The fake news entitled
“Robredo camp denies giving away P100 during caravan.
It is state in the article that Robredo’s spokesman Barry Gutierrez are
getting photos and information of an alleged caravan kit given away during the
motorcade. The kit consists of snack bar, face masks, campaign stickers, an
inspiring letter to vote for Leni Robredo and of course the main topic which is
the accusations giving P100 bill. She said that they receive the photos after the
day of caravan in the morning. She said that it is actually fake news. Vice
President. Leni Robredo is overwhelm because team Leni is growing but there
are people who wants to ruin the image of Leni Robredo. She predict that kinds
of slander as the team Leni grow stronger in numbers. The spokesman posted a
picture on twitter about the issue which is fake. It is said to be slander moves.
Team Leni don’t want to do that to buy votes. She pledge that she need to
change the corrupt system of politics like vote buying. It is included in the
screenshot of a direct message where someone was told if Leni Robredo already
witnessed the news about the vote buying accusations. The screenshot also
included a picture where Leni Robredo and Pangilinan’s camp supposedly gave
out P20. One of Robredo’s volunteer grouo, which say in the sticker that “Dapat
Si Leni”, also denied that accusations that they gave P100 away during the
motorcade. It is said in the twitter group page that vote buying is not how they
do and P100 will waste your time. The person named Manuel Mejorada posted a
picture on twitter and it shows in the picture that he received a kit from
Robredo’s camp with P100, campaign stickers and snacks. This picture was
shared by blogger Wer2GOPH on Facebook. With the supporters of Leni
Robredo, they spread and encourage everybody to mass report the post as fake
news. The supporters said that they didn’t need to be paid P100 when they are
spending for the caravan more than three hours. Additionally, it’s not sufficient
to cover the fuel price during the hours-long caravan. They are more that 10,000
vehicles k around 50 cities nationwide held the caravan of Hope for Robredo
and Pangilinan.
My insights about this news is literally not true. The false information
and accusations is identified in the article. Vice President Leni Robredo clarified
that she is totally against vote buying. He aid that rules on vote buying can result
of poor enforcement. We are all aware about the law and we are not happy to
enforce. It is a must that we think first before we act. All we have to do is to not
accept, the vote that is not our conscience, that is in our heart and not to have a
debt of one’s inner self. The fact that Leni Robredo tried to address the issue
about the case for vote buying in 2013 but it was dismissed. Vote buying is one of
the major problem in politics and it is very rampant. It is frustrating how it is
not implement by regulations against vote buying. Many people are stressed and
problematic that they should still vote as her conscience dictates.

II. In view of Aquinas’s assertion that reason is what makes us uniquely human and that
being reasonable opens up both an epistemic concern for truth and also a social
concern of being in relation with others, provide an assessment on the value or
disvalue of post-truth phenomena such as fake news or alternative facts.
 We are exist in a post-truth world, where alternative facts replace actual
facts and perception have more importance than evidence. The terms
fake news and alternative facts are controversial and ambiguous. The
definition of fact in noun is mean to be as a thing that is admitted or
confirmed to be true. It is acknowledge that it is hard to prove what is
fact or fake, as spreading facts does not specifically mean sharing the
viewpoint of what is a fact. The fact is always approved, examined and
therefore true and something oppositely to this cannot be known as a fact.
Alternative facts associate more to the construction of fact making
whether intentional or unintentional. Fake news is defined to intentional
misbelief or false information that emulate facts and is give out through
social media in some instances. In post-truth politics, we can’t help but to
know the risks to democracy given the false information that disseminate
quickly on social media around political campaigns as well as voters
misinformation, disinformation about civic controversy and warning
from foreign governments. We can’t express what news is fake and what
news is truth. And the outcome can be confusion and misinterpret about
crucial political and social issues. Fake news makes it tough for us to see
what is truth. We are separated on the actual truth of things regarding
reality as such.

III. Consider other topics within the realm of media ethics. Select one and give an initial
presentation of the significance of discussing this topic.

The topic that I’ve chosen in the realm of media ethics was all about privacy
issues. The right to privacy is a main issue of many mass media ethics cases. The
significance of ethical decisions is to build how to control other peoples
information because the platforms and services that is use online are networked
or accessible. Many people are not aware on how easily their privacy can be
broadcast to audiences. Celebrities know a loss of privacy is a cost of fame.
Politicians and other public servants know their power brings public
investigation and they carry awareness into many of the decisions they make.
There are ways in which other people’s personal information cam be shared
online. First, when we post a picture or video that we took which has other
people in it with or without their consent or knowledge. Second, when we share
information that someone else has posted or taking a screenshot of a photo that
someone sent us just like “liking” someone’s post. Lastly, when we use “tag”
photos or posts with a person’s name which makes it visible to that person’s
friends and will make it appear when someone does a search for their name. Not
only it is crucial to have our privacy secured but to respect and secured also the
privacy of others. It is crucial to ensure that every individual who send messages
are aware of the potential social and privacy consequences. Learning ti respect
privacy is an important component of ethical value.
