Discussion

An idiom (also called idiomatic expression) is an expression, word, or

phrase that has a figurative meaning conventionally understood by native
speakers. This meaning is different from the literal meaning of the idiom's
individual elements. In addition, there are four types of idiom: pure idioms,
binomial idioms, partial idioms, and prepositional idioms. Some people may
consider clichés, proverbs, and euphemisms to be types of idioms as well, but
we'll explain why they are different from idioms.

There are also 4 types of idiom:

Pure Idiom- Pure idioms are idioms whose original meaning is lost to
the extent that there is no possible way to analyze the phrase logically to
come to an understanding of its meaning.

Binomial Idiom- Binomial idioms are idioms that involve two parts that
work together or in contrast to construct an expression.

Partial Idiom- This idiom refers to a look of ferocity in someone’s face

that can usually be identified in the intensity of their eyes.

Prepositional idioms- are idioms that contain prepositional verbs plus

an adverb or a preposition to create non-literal meaning. These types of
idioms need to be placed into a sentence and cannot be used in isolation
(they are not ‘fixed collocational idioms’).
