EXPERIMENT 1
MEASUREMENT and UNITS
I. OBJECTIVE
The objective of this experiment is to become familiar with the measurement of
the basic quantities of mechanics and to become familiar with the recording of experimental
data paying special attention to units and significant figures.
III. APPARATUS
Ruler, vernier caliper, micrometer, pendulum, stop watch, digital balance, analogue balance,
electric circuit, multimeter.
Procedure (6)
1. Using the two balances, the analogue and digital one, take reading of the masses
of the different spherical objects provided in the laboratory
2. Record the results in a table, annotating the reading taken with the analogue and
the digital balance
Procedure (7)
1. Using the electric circuit arrangement, take the following readings, the potential
difference of the two batteries, the electric current when the circuit is connected
and the 2 resistance of the resistor.
2. Annotate the results in the table.
V. ANALYSIS
1. Do all the calculations required to fill in the data tables. Make sure you round
off your answers to the proper number of significant figures and give the
units of all measured and calculated quantities.
