2. SUMMARY: This Service Bulletin (SB) outlines actions required to update ARTEX ELTs equipped with
an original, non-hermetically sealed G-Switch to an updated, hermetically sealed G-switch.
4. APPLICABILITY: ARTEX C-406 Helicopter Models (HM) or C-406 and G-406 ELTs used in helicopter
applications.
5. REFERENCES: All ELT IMM, CFR 91.207, CAR 571 Appendix G, ACR SIL #SIL4001
6. BACKGROUND: ACR Electronics, Inc. (ACR) is continually monitoring the serviceability of its
products and using data from fielded units to improve reliability. Design updates based on this data
included the introduction of an updated (hermetically-sealed) G-switch assembly in the C406 family
of ELTs commencing in 2016. Subsequently, ACR issued guidance to Authorized Service Centers
(ASC) to replace the original G-switches on units received for service.
In accordance with a recently issued advisory by the G-switch manufacturer (SB-01 dated August 22,
2018), ACR is introducing a replacement mandate or increased inspection frequency for ARTEX ELTs
equipped with original G-switches. The applicability of this action is for rotary aircraft only, which are
subject to higher levels of shock and vibration.
This Service Bulletin augments previous guidance issued to ACR Electronics approved ASCs directing
the testing of original G-switches and/or replacement at the next service event.
7. ACTION: Operators using ARTEX ELTs, listed in Table 1 on page 3, operated in a rotary-wing
environment and with more than five (5) years in-service, shall review any previous service records
related to G-switch replacements to verify the current switch configuration.
o Unless the updated G-switch is proven to be installed, the part must be returned to the
ASC for replacement of the original G-switch with an updated switch.
o Alternatively, the operator must increase the inspection frequency of the ELT in
accordance with the alternative means of compliance (AMOC), below.
When the original G-switch is replaced, the 5-way G-switch must be replaced as well. Any ELT that
has been modified to include the updated G-switches in accordance with this SB will be identified with
a label stating that SB1000 has been implemented, which will include the date of replacement.
8. ALTERNATIVE MEANS OF COMPLIANCE (AMOC): Operators may continue to use ELTs with the
original G-switches by following a revised minimum inspection interval as dictated by the G-switch
manufacturer.
• ELT units with five (5) to seven (7) years in-service: Increase the G-switch test frequency
outlined in the respective IMM (see Table 1) to a four (4) month interval.
• ELT units with seven (7) to nine (9) years in-service: Increase the G-switch test frequency
outlined in the respective IMM (see Table 1) to a three (3) month interval.
NOTE: ELT units with original G-switches with ten (10) or more years in-service must have all G-
switches replaced.
