FIFA World Cup 2022
• 22nd edition of the FIFA World Cup.

• Held in Qatar from 20 November to 18 December 2022, first World Cup held in the Arab
world and Muslim world, and the second held entirely in Asia after the 2002 tournament in South
Korea and Japan.

• France were the defending champions, having defeated Croatia 4–2 in the 2018 final.

• Qatar becomes the first host nation to lose their opening match in World Cup history.

• At an estimated cost of over $220 billion, it is the most expensive World Cup ever held; CEO
Nasser Al Khater, said the true cost is $8 billion, and other figures relate to overall infrastructure
development since the World Cup was awarded to Qatar in 2010.

• The Day of Eight Billion, marked at 8:00 a.m. UTC+0 on 15 November 2022, was designated by
the United Nations as the approximate day when the world population reached eight billion people.

• It follows the Day of Seven Billion, which was marked on 31 October 2011.

• The world population's growth to eight billion people in 2022 – up from five billion in 1987, six
billion in 1999, and seven billion in 2011.

• A baby girl born in Tondo, Manila, is being considered as the symbolic eighth billion person in the
world. Vinice Mabansag was born at Dr Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital at 1:29 am (local time).

• NASA launches the Artemis 1 mission after months of delays. It is the first flight of the Space
Launch System. The Artemis program intends to re-establish a human presence on the Moon
for the first time since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972.

• The Artemis program is a robotic and human Moon exploration program led by the United States'
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) along with three partner agencies:
European Space Agency (ESA), Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), and Canadian Space
Agency (CSA).

• According to plan, the crewed Artemis 2 launch will take place in 2024, the Artemis 3 crewed
lunar landing in 2025.

Presidency of the UN Security Council
• India has assumed the Presidency of the UN Security Council for the month of December.

• It is the second time in its two-year tenure as an elected member of the UN Security Council that
India has assumed the Presidency of the Council.

• India had earlier assumed the Presidency of the UNSC in August 2021.

• Pakistan has been elected seven times (tied with Colombia) into the UN Security Council, with
the most recent term in 2013.

• UN panel has recommended that Australia's Great Barrier Reef should be listed as a World Heritage
site that is in danger.

Tokyo allows homosexuality
• Tokyo began issuing partnership certificates to same-sex couples who live and work in the
capital a long-awaited move in a country without marriage equality.

• The certificates allow LGBTQ partners to be treated as married couples for a range of public
services in areas such as housing, medicine and welfare.

• LGBT is an initialism that stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender.

Climate Change is dangerous
• The world needs to set aside an area bigger than the United States for tree planting and
other measures to meet climate pledges, according to research published that warned against
“unrealistic” carbon-cutting plans.

• Recent UN assessments conclude that current policies and plans are not nearly enough to limit
global warming and avoid catastrophic climate impacts.

• An assessment of plans from 166 countries and the European Union, released by the University of
Melbourne, estimated that the total area implied was almost 1.2 billion hectares (2.9 billion
acres) — bigger than the United States, or four times the size of India.

COP27
• On 20 November, the 27th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework
Convention on Climate Change (COP27), that took place in the Egyptian coastal city of
Sharm el-Sheikh, concluded with a historic decision to establish and operationalize a loss and
damage fund.

• From 6 to 20 November, COP27 held high-level and side events, key negotiations, and press
conferences, hosting more than 100 Heads of State and Governments, over 35,000 participants and
numerous pavilions showcasing climate action around the world and across different sectors.

OSPREY
• International Business Machines Corp said it launched its most powerful
quantum computer to date called the OSPREY, a 433-qubit machine that has
three times the number of qubits than its Eagle machine announced last year.

• The number of qubits, or quantum bits, are an indication of the power of the quantum computer which
uses quantum mechanics, although different quantum computer companies make different claims about
the power of their qubits which can be created many different ways.

• From 2022 onwards, 3rd November will be celebrated as 'The International Day for
Biosphere Reserves'.

• BR is an International Designation by (UNESCO) for representative parts of natural and cultural landscapes extending over

Midterm elections in US
• Midterm elections in the United States are the general elections that are held near the midpoint of a
president's four-year term of office in November.

• The 2022 United States elections were held on November 8, 2022.

• During this U.S. midterm election, which occurred during the first term of incumbent president Joe
Biden of the Democratic Party, all 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and 35 of
the 100 seats in the U.S. Senate were contested to determine the 118th United States
Congress.

• The Republican Party narrowly won control of the House, while Democrats slightly expanded
their majority in the Senate.

2023 AFC Asian Cup
• The 2023 AFC Asian Cup will be the 18th edition of the AFC Asian Cup, the quadrennial
international men's football championship of Asia organised by the Asian Football Confederation
(AFC).

• It will involve 24 national teams after expansion in 2019, with Qatar as the defending champions.

• The tournament was originally scheduled to be held in China. But AFC announced that China would not host
the tournament due to the circumstances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and China's Zero-COVID policy.

• On 17 October, the AFC announced that the tournament will be held in Qatar.

• Qatar will become the first country to host three Asian Cups, after 1988 and 2011.

• Croatia will join the Schengen Area at the start of 2023, the European Union confirmed,

• The defending champions France defeats Morocco 2–0, advancing to their second consecutive World

nickname Pelé, was a Brazilian professional footballer who played as a forward.

• Jonathan the Seychelles Giant Tortoise is celebrating his 190th birthday — more or less —
on St Helena in the remote South Atlantic, where the defeated French emperor died in exile in
1821.

• Jonathan, it is believed based on shell measurements, was hatched around 1832, and he was
brought to the UK overseas territory from the Seychelles 50 years later.

• California start-up OpenAI has released a chatbot capable of answering a variety of questions, but
its impressive performance has reopened the debate on the risks linked to artificial intelligence (AI)
technologies.

• The conversations with ChatGPT, posted on Twitter by fascinated users, show a kind of
omniscient machine, capable of explaining scientific concepts and writing scenes for a play, university
dissertations or even functional lines of computer code.

Most Powerful Telescopes In The World.
• Australia started building a vast network of antennas in the Outback, its section of what planners
say will eventually become one of the most powerful radio telescopes in the world.

• When complete, the antennas in Australia and a network of dishes in South Africa will form the
Square Kilometre Array (SKA), a massive instrument that will aim to untangle mysteries about
the creation of stars, galaxies and extraterrestrial life.

• The SKA Observatory’s Director General Philip Diamond described the beginning of its

• The new 50 pence piece features an effigy of Charles.

• The Royal Mint, is initially releasing 4.9 million of the coins.

Gold ATM
• India’s first ever “Gold ATM”, delivering gold coins at the click of a button.

• Set up in the south Indian city of Hyderabad, the gold ATM is the brainchild of GoldSikka and
dispenses gold coins that weigh anywhere between 0.5 and 100 grams.

• “Instead of going to jewellery showrooms, they (customers) can come here directly and they can get
the coins here,” GoldSikka Vice President Pratap.

• India is the world’s second-biggest gold consumer.

• Two-thirds of India’s gold demand usually comes from rural areas, where jewellery is a traditional
store of wealth.

Religious Violator Countries
• The United States added Pakistan to the list of countries that “engaged in or tolerated
particularly severe violations of religious freedom”.

• US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement governments and non-state actors harass, threaten, jail, and even kill
individuals on account of their beliefs around the world. He said that, in some instances, they stifle individuals’ freedom of
religion or belief to exploit opportunities for political gain. Such actions, according to Blinken, sow division, undermine
economic security and threaten political stability and peace.

• After several false starts, Twitter announced it would relaunch its subscription service next week,
including a system for authenticating accounts on the platform.

• “We’re relaunching @TwitterBlue — subscribe on Web for $8/month or on (Apple’s) iOS for
$11/month to get access to subscriber-only features, including the blue checkmark,” the company
tweeted.

• A blue checkmark on an account, which indicates it has been verified by Twitter, was previously free but reserved for
organisations and public figures in an attempt to avoid impersonation and misinformation.

• A SpaceX rocket blasted off early carrying a US-French satellite designed to conduct an
unprecedented global survey of Earth’s surface waters, a mission expected to shed new light on

Angelina Jolie
• Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie will quit her role as a special envoy for the UN refugee
agency (UNHCR), but will remain a humanitarian activist.

• Jolie, who has been on more than 60 field assignments during her 21 years with UNHCR, said she
wanted to keep working with refugees outside of the global body.

• Jolie has been UNHCR special envoy since 2012.

(UNCSW)
• The United Nations voted to remove Iran from a women's rights body over Tehran's brutal
crackdown on women-led protests.

• Following a campaign led by the United States, 29 members of the UN Economic and Social
Council (ECOSOC) voted to expel the Islamic republic from the United Nations
Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW) for the remainder of its 2022-2026 term.

• Eight countries voted against and 16 abstained.

• The resolution says it strips Iran of its membership in the commission with immediate effect.

• The world celebrate International Anti-Corruption Day on December 9.

• The main motive behind marking this day is to spread awareness about a corruption-free society.

• The Cambridge dictionary has changed the definitions of “man” and “woman”

• The definition of “man” is now “an adult who lives and identifies as a male though they may have
been said to have a different sex at birth.

• “The updated definition of “woman” reads: “An adult who lives and identifies as female though they
may have been said to have a different sex at birth”.

World’s Richest Person
• Elon Musk has lost his crown as the world’s richest person, after further falls in the value of
shares in his electric car company Tesla.

• Forbes and Bloomberg, which track the wealth of billionaires, reported that Musk had lost the
top spot to France’s Bernard Arnault, the chief executive of the luxury group LVMH.

• The electric car company has lost more than half of its market value since Musk first made a bid for
Twitter in April.

Word of 2022
• For the first time ever, the Oxford English Dictionary’s (OED) word of the year was left to the
public to decide. Over 340,000 people participated, with ‘GOBLIN MODE’ receiving 93% of the
total votes.
• The OED defines it as “a type of behaviour which is unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social
norms or expectations”. Goblin mode seemingly captured the mood of individuals who rejected the idea of returning to a ‘normal life’ post-
pandemic as people started to leave their homes more often.

• Merriam-Webster dictionary chose ‘GASLIGHTING’, after a 1,740% rise in searches for the term
this year.
• According to the OED it means “manipulating (a person) by psychological means into questioning his or her own sanity”.

• Dictionary.com crowned ‘WOMAN’ as its word of the year, after a 1,400% spike in searches over
