ASSIGNMENT 1 (Observations): After arrival, take a seat in a nonintrusive location to begin your

classroom observations. Complete the questions below:

Observation 1: What are your first impressions of the classroom environment? Is it warm, inviting,
organized, etc? Describe the physical environment in detail. >>>

My first impressions of the classroom environment were warm and friendly. It is very
organized and inviting. The physical environment of the class is individual desks for each child
that are pushed together is fours to make a group. They are plastic so they can write and
erase on the desks dry erase markers. The class theme is Happy Campers. So there is
a Camping Store where they can get well earned stickers to shop for. There is a camping
reading area where there are a lot of books to read. There are two whiteboards, one on each
wall of the rectangle room. There are sight words on the wall for reference. There are
numbers on another wall up high listed to 120. The alphabet with correlating pictures are also
above one of the white boards. So the kids can reference the alphabet. The colors in the room
are very light, teal, and white. Very soothing and inviting. When you first walk in there are
cubbies, 1 ft by 1 ft for the students' paperwork. They have hooks underneath to hang their
belongings on, backpacks, coats, and lunch boxes. I counted 24 cubbies. There are also
shape posters on another wall. Her teacher's desk is tucked all the way in the back of the
room. She is very rarely at her desk. The kids are situated in the middle of the room with
areas to visit around the center. There are a few desks in the back of the room that she uses
for misbehaved students. They are usually empty when I come in. There is a water fountain
and a bathroom in the back of the room also.

Observation 2: Please describe the student make-up of the class, including gender, ethnicity, ELL,
students with physical challenges, and any other apparent attributes that are important to note. >>>

The student make-up of this class is very diverse. White, Black, Asian, Hispanic. There are no
physically challenged students. There is one little girl that has to be redirected quite a bit
when I am there. But, other than that they all seem well behaved and engaged.

Observation 3: What are the posted class rules in the room? (exactly as written) >>>

I could not find any classroom rules posted anywhere in the room. I saw many referencing
posters for educational purposes. Letters, numbers, shapes, and sight words were most of
what I observed.

Observation 4: Does the teacher enforce these posted rules? Are rewards or consequences being used
for compliance or noncompliance? >>>

The teacher enforces her own rules because there are none posted. The rules that she has in
place are enforced with care and decisiveness. They are rewarded in several ways. They
can earn points to earn a water bottle sticker. They can earn table points for free playtime.
They are complimented when they are doing well, or when they are doing the work as asked.
The teacher has moved students to the back of the room for misbehaving or not being on
task. Example: A girl threw a small paperback book across the table, Mrs. Ordinola
immediately explained why she was being moved and did she understand why she was being
moved. The students also can get table points taken away.
