PURPOSES AND OBJECTIVES

CRITERIA:

The area of Purposes and Objectives is the most fundamental of all the nine areas
to be surveyed. Everything in school is justified only to the extent that it realizes it
avowed purposes and objectives. It is essential therefore, for a school to draw up for
itself those purposes and objectives that express its philosophy of education that should
pervade its operation. An institution is judged not by comparison with other schools,
which may legitimately vary in many respects, but by the degree to which its objectives
are carried out in practice.

A. Statement of Purposes and Objectives of the Institution

A school’s purposes and objectives should be determined on the light of the needs
of the clientele which it intends to serve as well as those of the larger community. They
should be formulated not only for the institution as a whole, but also for the particular
college under survey.

These purposes and objectives should be clearly stated in the prospectus,

catalogue, or bulletin of information of the institution readily available, to prospective
students, their parent and other interested persons.

The objectives should be in harmony with national and regional goals and
desirable Filipino cultural values. They should take into consideration the development of
the students into mature and responsible persons.

B. Specific program Objectives

Within the framework of its philosophy and general purposes and objectives, each
institution is encouraged to choose and formulate the specific objectives of each individual
college or course. Such specific objectives should be achievable and educationally sound.

C. Faculty/Staff/Student Awareness and Acceptance of Institutional

Objectives

The faculty participates in the formulation, reviews, and/or revision of the

purposes and objectives of the institution and the college.

D. Implementation of the objectives

The program under survey shows adequate evidence that the school strives to
realize its stated philosophy and objectives. Its educational practices and activities are in
harmony with its objectives.

E. Additional Information/Exhibits

Additional information may be given to elaborate on or clarify the contents or

peculiarities as the case may be. Exhibits will serve to strengthen the position of the
school whenever the visiting team may require positive evidence to support the written
report.

EXPLANATION

The institutional Self-Survey Team should fill out Divisions A to D of this form
before the survey of the other areas is undertaken. The other areas will be evaluated in
the light of the purposes and objectives professed by the college under survey (e. g.
Liberals Arts, Commerce, etc.) and the entire institution of which the college is a part.
Thus, the Self-Survey Team – as well as the faculty committees which join in the work –
should be aware of the information supplied in this Form and should keep it in the mind
as they inspect the various features and activities of the College.

This section on purposes and objectives indicates not necessarily what the college
already is, but what it is in the process of becoming. The last part of the preceding
statement should be carefully distinguished from mere hopes, promises or plans, in
answering the questions which follows below.

The important question: Is there harmony between the actual educational

practical and activities as seen in this college and the purposes and objectives?” serves as
indicator of fidelity to the purposes and objectives for the survey of the others areas. The
propositions contained within Divisions A, B, C and D of the Survey Form describe
necessary conditions for requesting accreditation. The Self-Survey Team should be
assured that these conditions are met in the course offerings (e.g. Liberals Arts
Curriculum, Commerce, etc.) before directing the survey of the other eight areas.

the symbol S; if verified as missing, place the symbol M. in Division B, the objectives
