PREPARATION, PROPERTIES, AND REACTIONS OF ACETYLENE (ALKYNE)

PROCEDURE
1. In a dry 100 ml distilling flask, 6 grams of calcium carbide granules were added. The flask is then
fitted with a cork carrying a dropping funnel and a delivery tube attached to the side for collecting
the evolved gas over water.
2. The dropping funnel was filled with 25 mL of water. Six test tubes were filled with water and
placed in the water trough.
3. The water from the funnel was allowed to slowly fall on the calcium carbide and collect several
test tubes of the gas, with the first two test tubes collected being discarded. When enough gas was
collected, the water was stopped being added.
4. Disassemble the apparatus, empty the flask, and expel the residue and washings outside the
building.
