Experiment No #10

To Determine the moment of inertia of flywheel.

Apparatus:

 Fly Wheel Apparatus.

Theory:

Moment of inertia of a fly Wheel:

Consider a flywheel which consists of a uniform wheel mounted on a shaft

which is, in turn, mounted in bearings. The shaft is horizontal and has a cord wound around it
with a mass attached to the free end.

First consider the motion of the acceleration mass:-

2h
a= 2
t

The angular acceleration of the flywheel is:-

a
α=
rs

The force in the cord to accelerate the flywheel is:-

F a=ma ( g−a )

Moment of inertia is:-

2
F a rs
I=
a

Fly Wheel Apparatus:

Fly Wheel Apparatus

Procedure:

1. Set apparatus
2. Measure the diameter of shaft
3. Wrap a cord around the shaft.
4. Apply load hanger..
5. Then place a weight on the hanger and note the height of the fall.
6. Release the flywheel and note the time taken for the weight to fall.

Observation & Calculation:

h=1m

Sr. No ma t M.O.I

Result:
M.O.I is 9.93×10−3
Comments:
The result varies from analytical values due to these reasons.

 Human Negligence
 Instrumental error
 Air Friction
 Weight of Hanger
