Video Production, Periods 3-5

NASA Reflection

For my CTE, NASA Hunch video, I produced an informative video about the necessities

needed and required to live and survive in space safely. From the start to the end of my idea, I

followed through throughout the whole process of my work. My final project showed each tool

needed to function successfully in space and its usage.

During the Pre-Production phase, a lot of brainstorming occurred about how I wanted to

execute my project. I wanted the audience to feel as if they were, in my mind, talking to an

individual who is in space. I messed around with story block audios to get an idea of the effect I

wanted to have on the audience. I also went through NASA’s website and read through the

criteria and the necessities needed to complete my project while thinking about what I would

want to know about the “world in space.” After searching on their website, I researched survival.

I took what everyone normally uses on earth, such as beds, water, and food, and incorporated

how different it would be in space compared to on Earth.

During the Production phase, I captured many action shots as I, the radio station receiver,

talked over my headset to an astronaut in space. I had the astronaut, Kenny, read through the

necessary supplies to survive in space while I checked off each item and its usage. The goal was

to have the audience understand how important it is to ensure you are prepared, especially while

on such an important job as an astronaut in space. An obstacle I encountered was the tried not

being steady and smooth as it tracked me down the halls. Instead, it was shaky because of the
floors and the turns it made. To fix this issue, we changed the shots to handheld to better execute

the shot. Another issue was the amount of time we had to film. Many other people were filming

at our scheduled time, so It was hard to crunch my filming with everyone else's, but my crew and

I got it done by time managing and communicating with our peers.

During the Post-Production phase, editing was very time-consuming, and it took a lot of

time to complete the work in the amount of time given. Especially with the subtitles, those took

up a lot of my time. To add on, there were many errors in the spelling that were found later on,

which were checked over and fixed. Many editing days required me to review my clips because

the order was all over the place, meaning I had to match clips up with the audio to make it work.

For example, the cuts when Kenny talks of me typing and searching for paper to show what

Kenny is looking for and explaining. Another obstacle was fitting the voiceovers with the shots

of myself because they had to line up perfectly at the time given, which was after I was done

speaking. I had to match up the audio and play around with each sequence to fix this. To

continue, the after-effects were something that I had to get some help with because I am not

advanced in that department of the film. Lastly, the control room not being open half the day

really impacted how I could work and complete my project in the given time.

My favorite part of the NASA Hunch production process was the Pre-Production phase,

as I got to visualize what I wanted and gather ideas on how to make my project appeal to an

audience. I enjoyed pitching my idea to my peers and hearing their feedback as they either

agreed with me or gave constructive criticism on improving. Also, I enjoyed researching further

into NASA to understand and learn about different concepts and how to execute my own.
There were many personal strengths and weaknesses that I came across during this

project. My strengths included the organization and execution of the project because I envisioned

it and completed it with the idea I had started with. However, If I had more time, I could’ve

added more effects and cleaner audio to strengthen my project and make it more appealing to an

audience.

I believe that I did yet didn’t meet NASA [program objective. I believe I didn’t because I

was over two minutes because I had too much information, yet the information was all necessary

for what I was talking about in my project. If I had more time, I would've been able to clean up

the audio and add more effects while also cleaning up the background to make it look more

professional. However, I believe I reached a target audience by informing people of the

requirements to survive in space as an astronaut exploring. While benign in crutch time while

filming, it was not easy to complete this project the way I had one hundred percent hoped to, but

now I know what I can improve on in the future.
