INTRODUCTION and FOCUS QUESTIONS

Have you ever wondered why various places in our country have different means of living and
lifestyle? For example, the people of Benguet and Baguio, aside from enjoying a cooler weather, rely greatly
on their region’s bountiful harvest of flowers and vegetables. They even celebrate it. Romblon boasts of its
quality marble and marble products. On the other hand, people of Polilo Island, a place frequently visited by
typhoons, struggle to progress despite their bountiful sea harvest.
Earth with its loyal companion, the moon, has an intimate relationship with the sun. Life simply
cannot exist without the solar heat the warms our planet. Science tells you that Earth came from the cosmic
cloud that formed the sun. Man in past has abandoned its nomadic way of life and has chosen to settle
down at certain locations. His immediate environment has shaped the way he lives and how he develops. It
is not possible, therefore, that man can live separately with his environment.

Hence, remember to search for the answer to the following question(s):

What is a natural resource?
How are you going to classify the natural resources?
How rich is the Philippines?
How is a particular natural resource formed?
What benefits do we get from a natural resource?

CONTENT STANDARD
The learner demonstrates understanding that the location, characteristics, and natural
resources make up the Philippine environment.

PERFORMANCE STANDARD

The learners will work in small groups, plan a week – long tour to the best places in the Philippines
to promote its beauty and natural resources.

LEARNING TARGETS

To create the most effective and meaningful students’ learning, this module is designed by providing
appropriate learning targets to be used along with the teacher to aim for and assess your
understanding.

1. I can recognize that Earth’s materials provide many of our resources.

2. I can describe ways of using Earth’s resources wisely.
3. I can identify how natural resources are used in the local community.
4. I can predict the effect of the unwise use of Earth’s resources.
5. I can practice conservation and protection toward the environment.

1. I can make definitions and construct sentences correctly using adverb of affirmation and
negation. DAY 1: ONLINE LEARNING

As we start this lesson, you are going to study about the natural forces and humanmade forces.

Shaping the Landscape

The surface of Earth is constantly changing. There are natural forces and humanmade activities that
shape the surface of the Earth.

Natural Forces

Same forces have been acting on and shaping the surface of Earth throughout its history. This
concept is known as the principle of uniformitarianism. Volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, weathering,
erosion, landslides, storms, and floods in the past have changed the landscape. These events still and will
continue to shape Earth’s surface today, but at different rates and intensities.

Some Reasons that can destroy landscapes

A. The movement of crustal plates generates

thousands of earthquakes a year. However,
the effects of an earthquake may vary from
place to place. It depends greatly on the local
surface and underground geological
conditions. Structures built on soft and loose
materials are relatively unstable compared to
structures built over solid materials.

Academy.”

B. Volcanic eruptions may release tons of dust and ash, life – threatening gases, and hot molten
rocks onto Earth’s surface. These materials, spewed out from the depths of Earth, kill every inch
of life along their path. The accumulation of volcanic materials will inevitably alter the landscape
right after the eruption, but it also eventually increases the fertility of the region once the volcanic
materials weather into soil.

Humanmade Forces
The changes described previously are brought
about by natural causes. However, changes in the
environment can also happen due to humans or
humanmade forces. These forces generally benefit
mankind, but there are times that they do not.
Man-made disasters can include hazardous
material spills, fires, groundwater
contamination, transportation accidents, structure
failures, mining accidents, explosions and acts of
terrorism. There are actions that we can take to
prepare to react appropriately to these events.

Process Questions:

1. What is the difference between natural forces and humanmade forces?

2. How do humans and nature shape the surface of Earth?
3. What are the effects of these humanmade forces?
4. What are the positive and negative implications of volcanic eruptions?
5. How does nature affect land formation?

DAY 2: ONLINE LEARNING

Natural Resources
The Philippines is endowed with rich natural resources. Misuse or abuse of these resources affect
the quality of the air, integrity of land, and characteristics of water. Explore the different natural resources of
the Philippines and investigate the environmental and health impacts of their misuse.

Fossil Fuels
It refers to organic materials that have experienced chemical and physical transformation over a very
long period of time. These materials originated from the remains of plants and animals that lived and died

Academy.”

million years ago. These organisms were buried, compacted, and altered to become a wide range of
substances that are chiefly composed of carbon. Although the original materials are very old, they are not
really fossils since the plants and animals were not preserved in any form. Thus, the term fossil fuel is
actually a misnomer, because of organic materials to become fuel, the organic must decompose.

A. Coal
It is a naturally occurring black or dark brown
rock that is composed mainly of carbon and
small amounts of hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen
and sulfur. The remains of large plants that
existed long ago turned into coal after being
buried, compacted and heated just enough to
become this substance. These processes take
million of years. As the organic material changes,
its carbon content increases, and consequently,
its value as an energy source.

B. Petroleum or Crude OilIt is a naturally –

occurring material primarily composed of
hydrocarbons, which are organic compounds
mainly of hydrogen and carbon. Because of its
composition, petroleum is a highly flammable
liquid. It also comes from the remains of marine
plants and animals that lived and died million of
years ago. But in this case, the organic matter
must be subjected to higher amounts of applied
heat and pressure compared to those that alter organic matter into coal. This alteration takes a
relatively much longer time.

C. Natural Gas
It is a fossil energy source that formed deep
beneath the earth's surface. Natural gas
contains many different compounds. The largest
component of natural gas is methane, a
compound with one carbon atom and four
hydrogen atoms (CH4). Natural gas also
contains smaller amounts of natural gas
liquids (NGL, which are also hydrocarbon gas
liquids), and nonhydrocarbon gases, such as
carbon dioxide and water vapor. We use natural gas as a fuel and to make materials and chemicals.

D. Geothermal Energy
The term geothermal comes from the two Greek
words: geo which means “earth” and thermos
which means “heat”. It refers to the natural heat
of Earth, which is present in the core, mantle and
crust. As you go deeper into Earth, the
temperature increases. The rate at which
temperature increases with depth is called the
geothermal gradient.

Earth Materials
A. Minerals
These are naturally occurring inorganic solid
substances that are composed of ions and
molecules bonded together. The type and
number of ions and molecules, and the nature
of their chemical bonding determine the
mineral’s shape, color, density and other
physical properties.

B. Rocks
These are naturally formed aggregates of minerals that may include fragments of other older rocks,
organic material like fossils or coal, and natural glass produced from volcanic eruptions. Not all
rocks have all of these components at the same time. The composition of a rock depends on the
source material of the rock and where it was formed.

Three Basic Types of Rocks:

1. Igneous Rocks form from the solidification of lava
on the surface of Earth or of magma underneath
the ground.

2. Sedimentary Rocks form either from the

fragments of older rocks that were physically
weathered and eroded, or from ions dissolved in
water that come from the chemical weathering of
older rocks When rocks are completely weathered,
they turn into soil.

3. Metamorphic Rocks form from preexisting rocks that

have been heated, folded, or crushed by intense
geological processes like subduction, mountain building
and faulting.

Process Questions:
1. What are the natural resources?

2. What are the types of rocks?

3. How rich is the Philippines?
4. What benefits do we get from a natural resource?
5. What impacts do these natural resources have on the environment and health if misused and
abused?

DAY 3 and 4: MODULAR LEARNING
