Community Contexts
ASSESSMENT
Groupings by School Assignment

Direction: Develop a strategy/school program for community engagement. Describe

two community-building strategies/programs you can implement in a physical or
blended class.

A successful plan should incorporate the following:

1. A description of two strategies/programs for community development.

2. Justifications for selecting these strategies.
3. Explanation of the specific types of learners for whom this plan is intended
and why it meets their learning needs.

BRIGADA PAGBASA & SYMPOSIUM: KONTRA BULLYING

Brigada Pagbasa and Symposium: Kontra Bullying are the programs that we
developed based on our observation at Pangasugan Elementary School. These
programs can be implemented both physical and blended classes. It involves the
engagement of school, parents, barangay officials, and the department of social welfare
and development (DSWD).

According to Mr. Rommel Fuerte, Executive Director of World Vision in the

Philippines stated that, “literacy, most especially amongst the children and youth, is one
of the key factors that determines how well a country progressed in the rapidly-changing
world. We have an unfortunate reality where some Filipinos, both young and old, are still
struggling with their literacy skills.” Brigada Pagbasa is a program that seeks to improve
the reading skills of the learners especially in Pangasugan Elementary School. On the
other hand, Bullying is one of the problems in Pangasugan Elementary School.
Symposium: Kontra Bullying is a program addressing and preventing school bullying. It
seeks to reduce instances of bullying in the community especially in the learning
environment. This program is designed to hold schools accountable when they fail to
correct students who tend to bully other students and to protect students against
bullying. This program evolved from teaching parents, students, and the whole
community, to educate their minds about how bullying can affect student’s learning and
how to prevent and solve the problems of bullying.

Based on our observations at Pangasugan Elementary School, most of the

problems that has been seen there, is that students in every grade level is still having
difficulty in reading, and there is frequent bullying to the point where some students are
already afraid to go to school. These problems help us develop these two programs
which are Brigada Pagbasa and Symposium: Kontra Bullying hoping that these
problems occur in Pangasugan Elementary School will be able to be solve by
implementing these two programs.

Brigada Pagbasa and Symposium: Kontra Bullying is intended in any different

type of learners including with those learners with special needs. These programs can
help improve the learning environment of the students because these programs involved
the engagement of the community such as the teacher, parents, barangay officials, and
the DSWD.

These programs are developed to promote also the engagement of the

community. Children does not learn only inside the four walls of the classroom but they
also learn from the members of the community. The behavior of the community where
the children belong reflects what community they have. Therefore, it is important to have
a better and engaged community for the better learning of the children. Having a
community that work together to support learning makes the physical learning
environment a safe, fun, and peaceful learning environment for the students.

As a future teacher, we always dream to have a classroom environment where

students are excited to learn and engaged in the work but we tend to have students who
are disconnected to education because they don’t see school as related to who they are
and the world they inhabit. There are strategies that we want to employ to foster a
culturally responsive learning environment. First, making contextual learning when
discussing some lesson, we educators must encourage our students to connect it to
their lives or their current moment. Second, forming relationships. Students cannot learn
effectively if they cannot feel connection between the teacher. We teachers must
connect to students and we must build it with transparency and trust. Lastly, involving
family and community in the academic lives of our students. According to WIDA
Consortium (2013) states that supporting students’ bicultural and multicultural identity
development, families will feel more included and more comfortable, ultimately, making
it more likely that they become partners with their children’s school.

In conclusion, these Family-school-community programs that we developed

promote family and community involvement in children’s schooling, with districts
encouraging parental assistance with homework, providing leadership opportunities,
forming partnerships with local organizations, and more. When families and community
members are involved in student learning, students improve their academic
performance and gain advocates that promote their success, helping them feel more
confident at school and in taking on more difficult classwork. This family-community-
