LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

Science 10 (Q2 – Lesson 8)
Operation of a Simple Electric Motor and Generator

I. Introduction
As they say, the use of technology today is truly significant.
Technologies can make our work easier and faster at the same time. With
this, it is just important to recognize the role of electromagnetic induction to
these technologies.

Electromagnetic induction is used to power many electrical devices

such as electric motor and generator. Electric motor is used in washing
machines, transformers and trains while an electric generator produces a
current applying the principle of electromagnetic induction.

In this learning activity sheet, you will be provided with exercises that
will guide you to have a deeper understanding on the operation of a simple
electric motor and generator because of electromagnetic induction.

II. Learning Competency

Explain the operation of a simple electric motor and generator
(S10FE-IIj-54).

III. Objectives
At the end of this learning activity sheet, you are expected to:
1. recognize the principle of electromagnetic induction;
2. identify the devices powered by electromagnetic induction; and
3. explain the operation of a simple electric motor and generator.

IV. Discussion
Electromagnetic induction is the process in which electric current is
generated by a changing magnetic field. Motors and generators are
electromagnetic devices that follow the principle of electromagnetic
induction.

Stator – stationary part

that is a permanent
magnet lining the edge of
the motor casing.
Commutator – reverses the
electrical current in the coil each
time the coil rotates half a turn.
Brushes – sends electrical
current to the commutator.
Terminals – the locations where
the battery attaches to the motor
and sends the current to spin the
rotor.
Engine – the portion of the
machine that converts the fuel
source into usable energy and
allows it to move or perform its
mechanical function.
Shaft – outputs the mechanical
energy.

A. The statements below explain the operation of a simple electric motor.
Arrange the events by placing numbers 1-6 on the space provided
before the number (1 represents the first event and 6 represents the
last one).

_____ The coil starts to rotate.

_____ The commutators are attached to the rotating coils, one to each end.

_____ When the power switched on, the brushes supply current to the
commutators.

_____ When the rotor rotates, the shaft also rotates, thereby converting the
applied electrical energy into mechanical energy.

_____ When current moves in the coil, the magnetic field is induced around
the coil.

_____ Current passes from commutators into the coil, placed in between the
poles of permanent magnet.

B. The statements below explain the operation of a simple generator.

Arrange the events by placing numbers 1-4 on the space provided
before the number (1 represents the first event and 4 represents the
last one).

_____ The rotor rotates.

4
_____ The mechanical energy is applied to the shaft.

_____ Thus, electricity is collected by the brushes.

_____ The movement of the rotor between the permanent magnets starts
generating electricity inside the coil of the rotor.

Motors and generators are electromagnetic devices. In _________,

electricity is required for its operation while in ________________, it generates
electricity.

Motors are classified as alternating current (AC) motor and direct

current (DC) motor. The ________________________ is suitable for large
industrial application while the _________________________ is suitable for
domestic applications.
Generators are classified as alternating current (AC) generator and
direct current (DC) generator. In ________________________, the current
reverses while in the _________________________, the current flows in one
direction.

When the power is switched on in a motor, the _______ supply current

to the commutators which are attached to the _______________. The current
passes from commutators to the coil, placed in between the poles of
permanent magnets. When the current moves in the coil, the _____________
is induced around the coil. The ____ starts to rotate. When the _______
rotates, the shaft also rotates, thereby converting the applied electrical

energy into mechanical energy.

In a generator, the ________________ is applied to the shaft and the

rotor rotates. The movement of the rotor between the permanent magnets
starts to generate _________________ inside the coil of the rotor. Thus,
electricity is collected by the brushes.
