Electric Motors and Generators

Electric motors and electric generators are pervasive
throughout everyday life and a critical component of just
about every industry. An electric motor and an electric
generator have the same underlying structure and function
according to the same underlying mechanism. Both also
convert one type of energy into another. The differences lie
in how electric motors and generators function and
operate, and therefore what their applications are.
How Does an Electric Motor Work?
The purpose of an electric motor is to convert electrical
energy into mechanical energy. This mechanical energy
can then be used to power everything from heavy,
industrial machinery to everyday tools and appliances
such as hair dryers. Electric motors use electricity as an
input and create motion as an output. The motion is the
result of electromagnetic induction caused by magnets
inside of the motor.
How Does an Electric Motor Work?
The structure of an electric motor consists of two basic parts.
There is a rotor, which is made up of coiled wires. The rotor is
situated in the middle of a component known as the stator, which
is lined with magnets or with coil windings. There is a small air
gap between the two. When an electrical current is applied to the
motor, the magnets or windings create a magnetic field that both
attracts and repels the rotor, causing it to spin. The spinning
motion of the rotor drives the shaft that it is mounted on, which
in turn can deliver the mechanical power wherever it is needed.
How Does an Electric Generator Work?

An electric generator is the exact opposite of an electric motor.

Rather than using electricity to create motion, electric
generators convert mechanical energy into electrical energy.
The transfer of energy begins with the mechanical rotation of
the shaft and rotor. As the rotor spins inside of the stator, it
generates a current. The current can then be harnessed and
used to supply electricity to an external circuit. Generators can
provide backup power to buildings or they can be used to
directly run tools and appliances.
How Does an Electric Generator Work?

Like electric motors, electric generators have a diverse

array of applications. They provide a good source of
backup power for residential, commercial, and
industrial applications. They are also extensively used at
construction sites.
