Learning Activity 2.1

Seatwork: “Let’s Work Together”

Communicate with your assigned partner to answer the following guide questions regarding
virtues and “acting in moderation”. If this activity is done asynchronously, it should be submitted
by partner via MS Teams. Please use the given format below.

• What specific virtue a PSUnian student must possess? Discuss your answer.
• What do you think is the importance of “acting in moderation” rather than acting in
excess or in deficiency? Give an example.
• How can you be a morally virtuous person in our present-day situation (i.e., during the
Covid19 pandemic)?

1. What specific virtue a PSUnian student must possess? Discuss your answer.

Humility is the number one virtue that a PSUnian must possess. Why? Because will be
essential to reach the goal of the Pangasinan State University to create highly principled, morally
upright, innovative, and globally competent individuals capable of meeting the needs of industry,
public service, and civil society. Being a humble PSUnian will definitely give credit to others
instead of himself/herself. This people will always be happy for others who achieved good things
and makes those people as motivation to continue and pursue the good things they want in life and
be an example to the coming young generation.

2. What do you think is the importance of “acting in moderation” rather than acting in
excess or in deficiency? Give an example.

Acting in moderation demonstrates self-awareness or taking care of our own body. So, it
is essential for us to control our life, and to give the excess things for someone in need in time of
shortage. The best example for this is controlling ourselves in consuming food and water. Many

individuals have enough food and water in their homes. They always fill their stomachs and
consume more because of their obsession of it. However, we must also consider the fact that
there are people who are also in need of food and water. They need something to eat for them to
live. Therefore, we must be gluttonous and only consume what our body only needs. In addition,
it will help us to save money too by not spending more food and water.

3. How can you be a morally virtuous person in our present-day situation (i.e., during the
Covid19 pandemic)?

I must be a generous person and must always think of the safety of everyone else. It is not
the time to be arrogant, but to be humble person who thinks for the sake of others rather than
being selfish. It is time to pray for one another rather than cursing one another. These are the
things for me to be morally virtuous person in our present-day situation.

Learning Activity 2.2

Homework - Interview with Parents/Guardians:

You will interview your parents or guardians about their opinions on one of the following
contentious social issues. Make a transcript and reaction of the interview based on what you
learned about the natural law theory of Aquinas:

1. Same sex marriage

2. Premarital sex
3. Extra-judicial killings
Prepare for sharing online: I will randomly select 3-5 “lucky” students among you to share their
chart or stories in our official messenger group chat. The interview transcript will be submitted
through MS Teams or email.

1. Same Sex Marriage

According to my parents/guardians’ statement about same sex marriage, it is wrong

marriage is an expression of love and commitment between a man and a woman. In addition, God

has created Adam which is a man, and Eve which is a woman whom will support each other in
their needs. They have based their thoughts according to the Holy Scriptures. Which means in our
Ethics subject, it is an Eternal Law constructed by Thomas Aquinas wherein all things that God
created are ordered or something that must be changed or revised.

2. Premarital Sex

According to my parents/guardians’ statement about premarital sex, they believed that it is

simple to assume that premarital sex is not addressed in the Bible. However, the reason for this is
that humans typically seek out negative phrases, such as a condemnation or a "thou shalt not,"
whereas the Bible primarily conveys God's viewpoint in good terms. And the Bible makes it
abundantly clear that sex only belongs in marriage, between a man and a woman. They have proved
me more by stating that the same principle underlies the ban on adultery the book of Exodus 20:14
in the Holy Bible. All extramarital sexual activity is included in the biblical definition of adultery.
The Bible warns that because of this, "marriage be kept in honor among all, and let the marriage
bed be undefiled, because God will judge the sexually immoral and unfaithful" (Hebrews 13:4).
Therefore, all of their statement pertains to Eternal Law constructed by Thomas Aquinas. It means
that what God says, it is final and must not be changed or revised for selfish purposes.

3. Extra-Judicial Killing

According to my parents/guardians’ statement about extra-judicial killing(s), it is either

good or bad depends on the situation. If it’s for self defense, it can be considered. The reason is
because waiting or calling for help in the middle of someone who wants to do terrible and
unacceptable to you might result major injuries or something that is worse is death. Therefore, just
to be safe, one must defend itself by killing that person who has a terrible plan for you. But if it’s
not for self defense, killing a person must undergo due process. So, investigation will be held to
judge if any person involved is guilty and worthy to be killed.
