Learning Competency:

Identify the types and classifications of robots and its purpose.

What I Need to Know

After going through this learning toolkit, you are expected to:
1. Understand the characteristics of robots.
2. Enumerate types and classifications of robots.
3. Identify robots that are essential to the community.

What is It

Distinguishing characteristics of a robot.

1. It is manufactured (man-made, does not occur in nature)

2. It can sense its environment.
3. It can respond to instructions.

What are some examples of robots?

• Real robots (Asimo, Aibo, etc.)
• Fictional robots (R2-D2, Wall -E, etc.)

Robot Classification
The following is the classification of Robots according to the
Robotics Institute of America

1. Variable-Sequence Robot: A device that performs the

successive stages of a task according to a predetermined
method easy to modify.
2. Playback Robot: A human operator performs the task
manually by leading the Robot.
3. Numerical Control Robot: The operator supplies the
movement program rather than teaching it the task manually.

4. Intelligent Robot: A robot with the means to understand its
environment and the ability to successfully complete a task
despite changes to the environment.

Why do we have robots? What is the advantage?

• The 4 D's:
• Dull work
• Dirty work
• Dangerous work
• Delicate work

Six types of real robots.

• Medical

Robotics experts have set their sights on the medical field. Many
believe that an autonomous robot could soon be a regular member
of any hospital’s medical staff performing all sorts of duties like
taking a patient’s vitals, reading case notes, or even performing
surgery!

And even if developments like that are farther in the future than
experts predict, doctor-controlled robots already have a massive
presence in the medical field, and demand for the less invasive,
more patient-tailored procedures that can be accomplished with
them is only growing.

This is a machine that blurs the line between “robot” and “medical
tool” since the device is always under the full control of the
surgeon, but the advancements it has fostered are astounding.

Using the daVinci system, some types of operations can be done

with just a few tiny incisions and with the utmost precision, which
means less bleeding, faster healing, and a reduced risk of
infection.

And while daVinci has been around for almost eighteen years now,
it kept getting more and more advanced, but with big tech
companies quick on daVinci’s heels to develop similar systems
with more autonomous features and a wider range of abilities, who
knows what’s next in this field.

• Military

Military robots come in different shapes and sizes depending on

the requirement, and they may be remotely controlled or fully
autonomous. Robots consist of different types of payloads
depending on the application. Depending on the application
requirements, sensors, detectors, weapons, programmed
software, and other payloads can be equipped on robots used in
the military.

Militaries are focusing increasingly on the development of various

new robot technologies that can be helpful for armies in case of
war. For example, the Defense Advanced Research Projects
Agency (DARPA) is financing a robotic submarine system that
could be used intelligently for several applications ranging from
detecting underwater mines, engaging in anti-submarine
operations, and protecting ships in harbors.

• Industrial
An industrial robot is typically some form of jointed structure of
which there are various different configurations. The robot industry
has defined classifications for the most common and these are:

• Articulated
• SCARA
• Cartesian
• Parallel (or Delta)
• Cylindrical.

• Domestic

Domestic robots are electronic robotic devices that are designed to

manage various types of tasks around the house. While some of
these devices focus on functions such as house cleaning, others
are designed to provide company for the elderly, monitor the
activities of young children, and operate kitchen appliances. While
the number and type of robots that are in actual use today are
somewhat small, designs for robots with a broader range of
capabilities are currently under development by a number of
different companies.

Of all the domestic robots currently in use today, the most common
is the smart vacuum. This type of household robot is capable of
maneuvering around the floor of a room, cleaning carpeting as well
as hardwood and other types of floors. The robot uses sensors to

identify the presence of furniture and other objects, and change
direction when and as needed. Small and relatively simplistic, the
robot takes up a fraction of the storage space required for a
traditional vacuum cleaner. Robots like these normally operate
with the use of a battery pack that can easily be recharged using
household current.

• Entertainment

Entertainment Robots, as the name indicates, are not robots made

to complete a specific task but, for the pleasure of the human it
serves. They can be used in tradeshows to generate lots of media
exposure and can usually be programmed with different speeches,
dance routines and more.

For example the ZoraBots Nao V6 w/ Zora Solution.

• Exploratory

There are many different types of Exploratory Robots in the world.

The Crabster cr200, Mars Rover and a robot that was sent down
into the Titanic a couple years ago. These Robots can help us with
our past, present and even the future. They are amazing little
"creatures" that help us out.

Believe it or not but robots could employ many but also take
jobs. The robots would need someone to build them. That could
employ many. The robots will need people to program them and
send them off to their mission. They will also need someone to
help think of different designs for robots. The robots could take
away jobs because they will do all the work in factories and other
businesses. Robots could help and employ people and take away
jobs.
