Osmosis

Estevan Yoguez
What is
Osmosis?
• osmosis is the movement
of water molecules from a
solution with a high
concentration of water
molecules to a solution
with a lower
concentration of water
• It is the diffusion of water
Omosis Process
• Osmosis is the transport of a solvent
through a semipermeable membrane
that separates two solutions of
differing solute concentration.
Importance
• Osmosis helps keep the cells turgid.
• Diffusion of water in cells is controlled
through osmosis
• Osmosis helps plants in maintaining
their water content
Three types of
Osmosis
• Hypertonic solution: When the
concentration is higher on the outside
of the cell
• Hypotonic Solution: When the
concentration is higher on the inside
of the cell
• Isotonic Solution: When the
concentration is the same on the
inside and the outside
