REVIEW
WHAT IS A CELL MEMBRANE?
MOTIVATION
• SIMPLE DIFFUSION (YOUTUBE)
DIFFUSION
• The net movement of material from an area of high concentration of that
substance to an area with lower concentration.
CONCENTRATION GRADIENT
EXAMPLE
OSMOSIS
• Osmosis is the process of moving water across a semi permeable membrane
towards ion or solute.
TONICITY
• Tonicity - ability of a solution to affect fluid volume and
pressure within a cell
1. Isotonic solution – the concentration of the water molecules is the
same as that in the cell
2. Hypotonic solution – contains lower concentration of solutes than
the cell
3. Hypertonic solution - has higher concentration of solutes than of
the cell
OSMOSIS AND CELLS
• Important because large volume
changes caused by water movement
disrupt normal cell function.
• CELL SHRINKAGE OR SWELLING
• ISOTONIC: CELL NEITHER SHRINKS
NOR SWELLS
• HYPERTONIC: CELL SHRINKS
(PLASMOLYSIS)
• HYPOTONIC: CELL SWELLS (LYSIS)
WHY ARE OSMOSIS &
DIFFUSION IMPORTANT?
All living things have certain requirements they must satisfy in order to
remain alive – maintain homeostasis
These include exchanging gases (usually CO2 and O2), taking in water,
minerals, and food, and eliminating wastes.
These tasks happen at the cellular level.
Molecules move through the cell membrane by diffusion
