plant roots and the movement of glucose from the cells of the
small intestines into the blood by active transport.
• To explain the importance of osmosis & active transport in living
organisms.
Success Criteria
I can:
• define osmosis and active transport.

OBJECTIVES:- Active Transport?

This is the movement of ions/molecules against a

concentration gradient across a partially permeable membrane.

Energy is required for active transport to occur

Protein carriers are involved which move the molecules

against the concentration gradient.

This process allows the absorption of substances from dilute

solutions
Point to note:

Passive transport
Active transport

gradient.
Mini plenary :

1.Name the type of substance that move through osmosis

process.
2.Which structure in cell acts as partially permeable membrane?
3.Which type of substances move by active transport?
4.How is active transport different from osmosis?
THINK AND ANSWER
OBJECTIVE:- To
describe the importance
of active transport in
organisms,

• Absorption of ions from

the soil into the roots.
• Absorption of glucose
and amino acids from
the small intestines into
the cells
• Absorption of glucose
from the kidney tubules
into the blood.
OBJECTIVES:- Difference between Active transport and diffusion

Active transport Diffusion /Osmosis

• Against Concentration • Down the Concentration
gradient gradient
• Energy(ATP) is required • No energy required
• Protein Carrier molecules • No protein carriers involved

Active Transport
Group 1: ( PTS 1-4)
1.Write two differences between osmosis and active transport.
2. Give an example of osmosis and active transport each in plants.
Group 2 (PTS 5-7)
1. Why cell membrane is called as semi permeable or partially permeable
membrane.
2. How will you differentiate between dilute and concentrated solutions during
osmosis?
Group 3: (PTS8-9)
1. How would you describe a solution that has a high concentration of
water molecules?

Extension task : ( If any group 3 students completes given task they will do extension task)
1. The diagram shows water and sugar molecules on either side of a partially permeable membrane.
What happens during osmosis?
A More sugar molecules pass through the membrane from X to Y than from Y to X.
B More sugar molecules pass through the membrane from Y to X than from X to Y.
C More water molecules pass through the membrane from X to Y than from Y to X.
D More water molecules pass through the membrane from Y to X than from X to Y.

2. The diagram represents the molecules in two solutions either side of a fully permeable membrane.

3. During osmosis, which molecules move and through which type of membrane
GROUP TASK ANSWERS
GROUP 1- Osmosis Active transport
Movement of water particles down Movement of ions/molecules
the concentration gradient against concentration gradient
Do not require energy Requires energy

Group 2
• 1. cell membrane allows some particles to pass
through but not others.
• 2.
Group 3
1. a dilute solution or it has high water potentia
2. Osmosis plays an important role in the
human body, especially in the gastro-
intestinal system and the kidneys. Osmosis
helps you get nutrients out of food. It also
gets waste products out of your blood.
