II. Introduction (Consider a short description of the contents and mention the
objective of the project)

In this present project we will know more closely, about the festivity of the "Virgen de la
Candelaria".

The devotion to the virgin developed with more force since the protection of the town of
Puno in 1781, by the rebel forces of Túpac Catarí, since her image was brought on
February 2, 1583, from Seville, Spain; that was taken out in the procession, which
generated the withdrawal of the warriors who thought that it was the support forces to
the Spanish army.

This festivity belongs to the department of Puno, it is celebrated in the month of

February, in which there is a variety of activities such as the celebration of a mass at
dawn, which is followed by an ancestral purification ceremony; an image of the Virgen
de la Candelaria is transported to make it travel in procession through the streets of the
city with the accompaniment of traditional dances and music. Then, the festivities
continue with the celebration of two contests in which about 170 groups from all over
the region compete, a contest of costumes of lights and the famous Cacharpari for the
farewell of the Virgen de la Candelaria.

We chose this festival because we found this topic very interesting because through
the report we want to publicise the importance of this tradition which has been
recognized as cultural heritage for the years of tradition that it entails and for the
different activities it covers which are striking both nationally and internationally.

Gastronomy of Puno

Characterized by the heat of a wood oven, using its clay pots and all the aroma that is

IV. Script

Edith: Hello, welcome to Peru-Puno, I hope you have a great experience and have fun
at the great party we will have for the Virgen de la Candelaria.

Maricielo: oh wow thanks, could you help us with some doubts we have?

Edith: yes of course like which one?

María: what dishes are usually eaten on that holiday?

Edith: There is a great variety of typical dishes, but the soups stand out the most. But
the most outstanding is the fried trout. We also have the head broth which is a delight
personally, the chairo, the alpaca pork rinds; they should try that.

Denisse: They all sound delicious, it would be perfect to try them, which restaurant do
you recommend? We would love to see the place, because we are very hungry.

Edith: You can go to "Cuy Andino" which is a restaurant with very good traditional
foods.

Rocio: That sounds good, I want to try pork rinds. I think the taste and presentation of
the dish will be very interesting.

María: In that restaurant I can find the Chairo, right? Because I want to eat that
hahaha.

Maricielo: mmmm, I don't know what to ask for, everything sounds like it must be very
rich, what a dilemma. But I think I'll choose the vicuña chicharrón, it sounds exotic, and
well I like the pork chicharrón, I want to know how different it is.

Dennis: I think I'll order a quinoa fish I've searched on Google and it says it's delicious,
it made me want to try that first.

Edith: These are good choices for lunch, so please follow me to the restaurant.

Rocío: So after lunch, where could we go? We want to take photos to remember and
see the landscape, which must be beautiful. I heard about the sanctuary of the virgin
called the temple of San Juan. I would like to visit that place

Denisse: Yeah, I'd love to see that place too... Let's go!

Maricielo: Yes, but it's very far away. I wouldn't want to walk that much either.

Edith: it's not that far away, it's about 30 minutes away, are you ready? we go!!!

Maria: woooo that place sounds very interesting, could you tell us more about it
please?

Edith: The altars are carved in wood, on the main altar is the venerated Virgin of
Candelaria and inside the back of the main altar is the Chapel of the Virgin, with more
than 100 embroidered mantles of various designs, materials and colours.

Rocío: That place has an incredible history

Maricielo: That sounds very interesting, we have to go there!! I would like to take
photos, there will be no problem if I take photos right?

Edith: Of course not, just don't take them with a flash.

Maricielo: fiuuu, thank goodness.

Denise: Definitely! And what other activities are there in this festival?

Edith: Another activity is visiting cemeteries to greet deceased relatives, then a

community mass is held.
Next, the procession of the Virgen de la Candelaria takes place through the streets of
the city.

María: I always wanted to see what a procession is like, I wouldn't miss it for the world.

Maricielo: and is it colorful? because vinque there are processions that are not very
happy, that is said.

edith: this procession is very colourful and joyful, you will see it

Rocio: I can't wait to see it, it will be a new experience, very interesting!

Maricielo: You have to take many photos, you have to record. I feel very excited! I hope
I can take exceptional photos.

Edith: That is the attitude, you will see that you will not regret having chosen Puno as a
tourist destination.

Rocío: Could you tell us since when this festivity has been celebrated? It must be very
old perhaps.

Edith: Sure, this festivity goes back to the year 1781 when the city was besieged by
Tupac Amaru's troops, since the inhabitants fearful of an attack by the Spanish
invaders at night decided to take out a statue of the Virgin with lit candles accompanied
by groups of sikuris (pan flute blowers).

Dennis: Wow, it's very old, but what days are they celebrated?

Edith: The Feast of the Virgen de la Candelaria in Puno is celebrated on February 1

and 2 of each year; On the first day, the dawn of festivities, the entrance to the candles
and the k'pos, as well as the vespers mass, take place.

Maria: It is very interesting and incredible, I have heard that they said that this
celebration lasts around 18 days, is it true?

Edith: That's right and one more fact, this was declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of
Humanity by UNESCO on November 27, 2014.

Denisse: How interesting, I am delighted with this place and I know I will have a lot of
fun.

Rocio: I'm sure we will enjoy this festival a lot! It's very different from the other
festivities I've been to before.

María: Wooo I would like to return to Puno with great pleasure to continue eating their
delicious meals and see how they dance.

Maricielo: Wow, so many things that happen in an apartment, I didn't think that
gastronomy was so different, and the festivities in the same way, I've had a great time
so far.

Edith: I hope you have fun. I hope they come back soon. For now we go to the
procession.
