Directions: Make your own vinta using a paper boat following the procedure:

Materials:
✓ long bond paper ✓ a short piece of very thin stick
✓ pair of scissors ✓ coloring materials

1. Fold the bond paper horizontally.


2. Fold diagonally the upper sides (left and right) through the center line.
3. Fold the excess paper outward and clip the excess on two sides to form a triangle.
4. Connect the clipped sides by opening the triangle to form a square.
5. Fold the clipped sides outward to form a triangle.
6. Open again the triangle to form a smaller square.
7. Pull the clipped sides downward and simply the boat will be visible.
8. Draw a design on your boat to make it colorful.
9. A stick may be used to put a sail using a piece of paper with your own choice of design.

ARCHITECTURES IN MINDANAO

TOROGAN

The Torogan is the ancestral house of the upper-


class of Maranao and the royal residence of the datu along
with his wives and children. It is commonly found in Marawi
City and other areas in Lanao del Sur.

The National Museum has declared Kawayan


Torogan as one of the National Cultural Treasures through
Museum Declaration No. 4-2008.

PANOLONG

The Panalong is a wing-liked ornament of


Torogan flaring out from the beams. These are not
found in ordinary houses in a community because they
symbolize power, rank and leadership. These carving
or okir of panolong usually features serpent, fern, floral
and star-and -bud motifs.

BADJAO HOUSES

The Badjao or Badjau means man of the sea. They


are the “Sea Gypsies” or nomads of the Sulu Sea. They
have no fixed residence because they move with the wind
and the tide on their small house bats called vintas. Most
of them live in the boat houses or houses on stilts around
the Sulu archipelago.

THE GRAND MOSQUE OF COTOBATO

The largest mosque in the Philippines is the Grand


Mosque of Cotobato, officially the Sultan Haji Hassanal
Bolkiah Masjid. The mosque occupies 5000 square meters of
five hectares land. It is considered to be a masterpiece of
Islamic architecture and one of the most popular landmarks
in Mindanao.

FORT PILAR OF ZAMBOANGA

The historical Fort Pilar is also called the Royal Fort


of Our Virgin Lady of the Pillar of Zaragoza, is one of the
most important attractions in Zamboanga, a symbol of the
region’s historical and cultural heritage and build to protect
the people from pirates of the Sulu. It was founded in 1635
and engineered by Fr. Melchor de Vera, a Jesuit priest.
and still stands strong until today.

MONASTERY OF THE TRANSFIGURATION OF BUKIDNON

The Monastery of Transfiguration is in Malaybalay of


Bukidnon was founded by Fr. Abbot Eduardo Africa and run
by the Benedictine Monks. The pyramid-like structure was
designed by Leandro Locsin, a National Artist for
Architecture. The monastery has been a top destination for
pilgrims during Holy Week in the province of Bukidnon.

SANTO ROSARIO CHURCH OF CAMIGUIN

The Santo Rosario Church in the town of Sagay,


Camiguin Island has a very simple exterior. The original church
was built in 1882 using coral stones. The unique things you can
find in the church are the driftwood chandeliers and altar. They
used local materials like woven bamboo skin which highlights
the local traditions of the island.
