Architecture of Mindanao was influence by different countries; churches were influenced
by Spanish, common Islamic mosque which can also be seen in Arabia and modern
architecture, the vernacular mosques of the Philippines used to be the hut-style and the
pagoda-style, which were very common until the late 19th century. Most of the mosques in
the Philippines today have common Islamic architectures imported from Arabia merged with
modern style, though some vernacular pagoda-style mosques can still be seen in Mindanao.

At the end of this module, the learners are expected to:

 create crafts that can be locally assembled with local materials, guided by local
traditional techniques (e.g., habi, lilip, etc);
 derive elements from traditions / history of a community for one’s artwork;
 show the relationship of the development of crafts in specific areas of the country,
according to functionality, traditional specialized expertise and availability of
resources (e.g., pottery, weaving, jewelry and basketry).

Architecture is important in our daily lives. The design of buildings either churches,
banks, houses and other gives its identity and inspires every viewer. In Mindanao we
learned the different countries who influenced its design in pre-Hispanic period even to the
modern period okir design is still present. It conveys the values and traditions of Filipino
Muslim.

FYI… Did you know that…green, to the Muslims, is a sacred color? As a proof of this, they
carry a green flag and wear green turbans after they have made a pilgrimage to the Holy
City of Mecca. They also design their prayer rugs with a green background. Indeed, the color
green has a special place in Islam. It is a decoration of mosques, the binding of Qurans, the
silken covers for the graves of Sufi saints, and the flag of various Muslim countries
