Let Us Study
Arts of the Visayas

Molo and Miag-ao Churches of Iloilo

Iloilo City is on Panay Island in the Philippines, located in the center of

the Philippine archipelago. The Spanish colonial influence is firmly imprinted
in Iloilo's history and cultural background and the architectural perspective
like churches and old houses.
When the Spaniards first set foot in the islands of Visayas, they
introduced the Catholic religion and used it to gain the people's trust. They
built churches that helped propagate their faith.
Throughout history, architecture has stood as a representation of
society, reflecting the values, successes, and eventual downfall of civilizations
over time. From the monumental structures to the residences and buildings
that make up the foundation of a city, we can learn a lot about who they were
and who inhabited them long before our time.

Molo Church in Iloilo depicts the fusion of Gothic and Renaissance

styles. The spires of the two towers of the church and the interior elements,
such as the altar and pulpits,
show the church's gothic
characteristics. It is built with
white coral rock and is considered
one of the most beautiful churches
in the Philippines.

It is said that this a

“Women’s church” because of the
16 women saints inside. It's St.
Ann, the mother of Blessed Virgin
Mary.

Miag-ao Church in Iloilo is an example of Baroque Romanesque architecture
that shows through its massive quality, thick walls, round arches, sturdy
piers, groin vaults, large towers, and decorative arcades.
It is famous for its artistic
sculptural relief carved in the
façade of the church that stands
as the living legacy of rich
culture and illustrates the way of
life of the people of Miag-ao,
anchored in a strong foundation
of Christian faith. It is also
acclaimed as a UNESCO World
Heritage Site.

Let Us Reflect

Today you have learned the Arts of the Visayas, particularly the
churches of Iloilo. The arts of Visayas, as you discovered, show the colorful
and rich influence of the Spanish conqueror. Their designs are derived from
their surroundings and represent their community. Some are used for
religious activities, while others have a utilitarian function and even become
a large industry. Architecture, for example, is a representation of society.
Architecture exists to create the physical environment in which people live at
its roots, but architecture is more than just the built environment. It is also a
part of our culture. It stands as a representation of how we see ourselves and
how we see the world.
