request for a declaration of war against Spain. The reasons for the war were numerous, but
the most immediate were America's assistance in Cuba's ongoing conflict with Spanish rule
and the mysterious explosion of the USS Maine in Havana Harbor. It will be the first

Philippine Islands. Within the Treaty of Paris, Spain ceded its long-standing colony of the
Philippines to America. On February 4, 1899, just a few days before the U.S.The Senate
ratified the treaty, preventing a conflict between American forces and Filipino nationalists
led by Emilio Aguinaldo who sought independence rather than an alternative in colonial
rulers. On December 10, 1898, the United States paid Spain $20 million to annex the entire
Philippine archipelago in Paris. Outraged Filipinos, led by Aguinaldo, prepared for war.
Furthermore, as he led American forces in putting down the rebellion, MacArthur was
thrust to the fore and distinguished himself within the area. The ensuing Philippine-
American War lasted three years and resulted in the deaths of over 4,200 Americans and
20,000 Filipino combatants. Violence, famine, and disease killed up to 200,000 Filipino
civilians.
