or do not fully understand how an interview works.

As well as outlining best practices for an interview; this ebook will explain

what each question means, why it is being asked and give you some hints

as to how you might answer it in order to give the best possible impression.

This question can be asked for a numbers of reasons, but most

likely it would be to ask if you understand whether there is

a n y t h i n g i n c o n s i s t e n t i n y o u r p r o fi l e .

This question is a good test of how a potential employee interacts

socially and is an indicator of their self-awareness. In your

answer to this question, plan it as a 20-30 second description of

yourself. Think of how you would introduce yourself in a

presentation to colleagues you have not met before.

Answer: Being a mother and a professional,


it’s important for me to a good role model for my
children by being a successful working mother
and being well respected by my colleagues.
I like being proud of the environment I work in,
so I do what I can to support my colleagues in

Often employers want to know if you will be leaving your

Some roles require you to travel, even if you do not want to. An

interviewer might ask this question to assess what your

commitment would be to this part of the role and also whether

y o u u n d e r s t a n d w h y t r a v e l m i g h t b e n e c e s s a r y.

This sounds like a simple question, but asked by most

e m p l oye r s t h i s i s b e t te r wo rd e d a s – “d o yo u u n d e r s ta n d w h a t

w e w a n t f r o m a n e w e m p l o y e e ? ” Tr y a n s w e r i n g t h i s q u e s t i o n i n

a way an employer might best understand you.

T h i s q u e s t i o n h a s a f e w d i ff e r e n t l e v e l s . I t g i v e s y o u t h e

opportunity to demonstrate understanding of business procedures

by describing the appraisal system in your previous or current

c o m p a n y. H o w i t w o r k s a n d w h a t i t i s d e s i g n e d t o d o . T h e n y o u

have to describe how you performed according to these

g u i d e l i n e s a n d fi n a l l y h o w y o u f e l t . T h r o u g h t h i s y o u h a v e t h e

opportunity to show an understanding of the need to be

responsible for your own performance.

Answer: My last appraisal was at year end, as it normally is.


We w e r e a s s e s s e d o n t h e a c c u r a c y o f o u r a t t e n d a n c e ,
task performance, our teamwork and our innovation.

My one comment would be that the appraisal targets are not
aligned with the business targets where completion of tasks
quickly is most highly valued.

T h i s i s p a r t l y a c o m e d y q u e s t i o n b u t i t i s a l s o t o t h r o w y o u o ff

opportunity to answer quickly and move on without being

phased. This is not necessarily an opportunity to

discuss super powers!

Answer: I always enjoy watching Peppa Pig with

the stories endearing.

YO U H A V E T H AT A R E

T h i s i s a n o t h e r q u a l i t y - c o n t r o l q u e s t i o n d e s i g n e d t o w e e d o u t l o w e r-

s t a n d a r d c a n d i d a t e s f r o m b e t t e r o n e s . Yo u w i l l n e e d t o c o n s i d e r w h a t

s k i l l s a n d e x p e r i e n c e ( f o r t h i s r o l e) t h e c o m p a n y a n d i n t e r v i e w e r m o s t

values and how you describe those skills. There is no trick to

This question is to discover what your strengths are and how

you act or react in situations where you are successful. An

employer might also want to assess where you allocate the

glory and achievement (i.e. to yourself, your team or your

company).

Answer: I was project leader once and I successfully


l e d m y t e a m t o a c c o m p l i s h t w o d i ffi c u l t p r o j e c t s i n
parallel before the client deadline. I was pleased
that I was able to manage my team well and we
c o m m u n i c a t e d i n a g o o d w a y. T h i s g a v e m e

one of my team members.

Q 1 2 : ‘‘ D O YO U
P L AY S P O R T S ? ’’
T h i s q u e s t i o n i s m a i n l y t o fi n d o u t m o r e a b o u t y o u r p e r s o n a l i t y

and character and whether you place emphasis on work alone or

i f y o u h a v e o t h e r p a s t t i m e s . U s u a l l y, p e o p l e w h o p l a y s p o r t s a r e

g o o d i n t e a m s (d e p e n d i n g o n t h e s p o r t ) a n d h a v e e n d u r a n c e .

They are willing to face challenges.

H A N D L E P R E S S U R E ? ’’
This question is to test whether you will be able to handle

unexpected situations at work or whether you are able to be

fl e x i b l e , i t a l s o i n d i c a t e s i f y o u c a n h a n d l e a n o n - s t a n d a r d

schedule at work. It tests whether you will crack under the

p r e s s u r e o r h a v e l e a r n t t o g e t t h r o u g h i t a n d c o m e o u t s t r o n g e r.

This question is to test whether you have done research before the

your pre-interview research and preparation. This will give the

i n t e r v i e w e r a n i d e a o f h o w m u c h y o u w a n t t h e j o b . Tr y h e r e t o a p p l y

activities, news and references to current employees.

T h i s q u e s t i o n a i m s t o fi n d o u t a b o u t y o u r o u t l o o k o n l i f e a n d

whether you’re a positive person. It’s not a question about

whether you believe in luck, but how you would rank your

lifetime performance in the context of the events in your life.

Answer: I would say seven. I believe that we create


our own luck. Planning ahead and making sure that
I am always prepared will ensure that when the
opportunity arises, I would seem to be
“luckier” than my peers.

Q 1 6 : ‘‘ W H E R E D O YO U S E E
YO U R S E L F I N F I V E Y E A R S ? ’’
Companies like people with a vision that motivates them.

People with a goal in mind will work harder towards their goals

a s c o m p a r e d t o s o m e o n e w h o d o e s s o m e t h i n g o n l y f o r t o d a y.

It also highlights dreamers who cannot focus on the gap analysis

required to be successful.

This might be a disguised question to see how you would

m a n a g e a t e a m i f y o u b e c a m e a t e a m l e a d e r, o r i f y o u h a v e

t h e p o t e n t i a l t o b e c o m e a l e a d e r i n t h e c o m p a n y. I t c a n a l s o

be a question to determine whether you undermine managers

i n g e n e r a l w i t h s u ffi c i e n t k n o w l e d g e o r i n f o r m a t i o n .

YO U T O W O R K ? ’’
This question aims to uncover what drives you and what is

important to you, and also to see what your character is like.

This is a rough gauge of what you would like to earn in this

c o m p a n y, a n d w i l l a l s o l e t t h e i n t e r v i e w e r k n o w h o w m u c h y o u

value your work. Be honest and be reasonable with market

references to appear most professional.

Answer 1: Based on my experiences, skills, and past jobs,


I think that a salary of $x is reasonable.
I am open to negotiations as well.

Q 2 0 : ‘‘ H O W D O YO U
E X P L A I N YO U R
C A R E E R B R E A K S ? ’’
T h i s q u e s t i o n a i m s t o fi n d o u t i f y o u h a v e g o o d a n d l o g i c a l

reasons for leaving work without a job in the past and if this is a

risk in the future.

Answer: I had one break in year x. I wanted to take


this break to focus on completing my degree in y so
that I could upgrade my skills and gain new knowledge,
which was hard to complete during full time work.
I also had another short break between my last
two roles as I wanted to travel with my family so I
could commit fully when I started my new job.

If you have taken a break to look after a family

This is the time to ask the interviewer questions about him or her

ask reasonable questions that might not be public knowledge

Sometimes, overtime is a necessary evil due to something that crops

up or a deadline that gets pushed forward. This question is really

A B O U T YO U ? ’’
T h i s q u e s t i o n a i m s t o fi n d o u t m o r e a b o u t y o u r p e r s o n a l i t y. I t

also gives you a chance to debunk any common opinions that

p e o p l e f o r m a b o u t y o u b a s e d o n fi r s t i m p r e s s i o n s . R e m e m b e r

t h a t y o u h a v e j u s t m a d e a fi r s t i m p r e s s i o n .

Answer: I think the biggest misconception people


h a v e a b o u t m e i s t h a t I a m v e r y fi e r c e o r d i s t r a c t e d ,
especially when I am concentrating or not smiling.
I am not. I am friendly and bubbly and I like to
talk to people and make new friends. It’s just that
sometimes my face does not convey that.

This question, often asked for urgent hires, is to see whether you

have other obligations and the time to commit to the job

to start any new role.

Answer: I will be able to start working next week,


and I will be fully committed to this job.
