A. Answer the questions number 1 to 4 briefly.

1. Computational Thinking (CT) is very important for all students at all levels to learn. What is
computational thinking? Define it comprehensively. (Points: 0 – 10)
Computational thinking is a generic skill which allows us to take a complex problem,
understand what the problem is and develop possible solution. Additionally, there are four
foundation of CT, which called abstraction, decomposition, pattern recognition, and algorithms.
Abstraction: focusing on the important information only and ignoring the irrelevant detail.
Algorithms: developing a step-by-step solution to the problem, or the rule to follow to solve the
problem.
Decomposition: breaking down a complex problem or system into smaller.
Pattern recognition: looking for similarities among and within problems.

2. Why does computational thinking (CT) need to be integrated into early childhood education?
Provide a comprehensive answer. (Points: 0–10)
Because CT is thinking literacy that needs to be practiced continuously and it should be
integrated into all subjects. By implementing CT, the early childhood children will be
accustomed to think systematically and finding effective, efficient and optimal solutions when
dealing with simple and complex problems. The ability to solve problems is a much-needed. In
daily life, the children are always faced with problems and need to decide which solution to take
from a variety of possible solutions.

3. Computational thinking (CT) covers the following skills: decomposition, pattern recognition,
abstraction, and algorithm design. Describe each of these skills comprehensively. (Points: 0–10)
Abstraction: focusing on the important information only and ignoring the irrelevant detail.
e.g. When a teacher uses excel to make it easier to calculate the average number of student
grades, the teacher only focuses on working with the data. The teacher does not think about how
the computer can process the work.
Algorithms: developing a step-by-step solution to the problem, or the rule to follow to solve the
problem.
e.g. When we want to buy things online. So, the steps are opening the Shopee app, searching for
the item that is needed, purchasing the item and making the payment.
Decomposition: breaking down a complex problem or system into smaller.
e.g When we want to go on vacation, but we are confused to find good tourist spot. So, we look
for references to interesting vacation spots via the internet.
Pattern recognition: looking for similarities among and within problems.
e.g When we had an experience in getting motorcycle flat tyre, so we will be able to repair the
car flat tyre.

4. If introduced to learners from an early age, computational thinking will enhance the learners’
attitudes. Explain this phenomenon comprehensively. (Points: 0–10)
Computational thinking will enhance the learners’ attitudes because CT is a cognitive or thought
process that involves logical reasoning where problems are solved. Thus, it will stimulate the
learners’ positive attitude which consists of the interest and enthusiasm. Also, it will help the
learner to think critically.

B. Answer the following questions and explain the reasons and the CT skills applied.

5. Spinning Squares (Points: 0–15)

Answer:

The above problem could be solved by using the CT skill, pattern recognition. We analyse the
colour at first to know the colour position change. Because we press the button only one more
time, so the blue colour will be on the upper right, the red colour will be on the bottom right,
and so on.

6. Honey Pot (Points: 0–15)

Answer:
To make the honey reach the pot by the shortest possible path, the path will be right-down-right-
down - click the tap-down-right-down-click the tap-down-click the tap-down-left-and down, then
the honey can reach the pot.
The CT skill used in this problem is pattern recognition

7. Getting Dressed (Points: 0–15)

Answer:

Since the Bruno wants to wear the braces over his shirt, so the best answer will be C or D.
To find the solution, we have to observe the pile starting from the topmost item and ensure that
the order is correct according to the constraint (shirt before braces).
Answer A and B are incorrect, because on picture A we wear braces at first before the vest.
While on picture B, we wear braces at first before shirt. Then, it will be an incorrect order.
The CT skill is algorithms and abstraction.

8. Toll Roads (Points: 0–15)

Answer:
Since Bob wants to have toll minimum fee to drive from Hamper to Mug, Bob can take road
A – C – D. Start from Hamper to A, Bob should pay 13, then from city A to city C Bob should
pay 6, from city C to city D Bob will pay 9 + 7, after that from city D to Mug Bob should pay
6. In conclusion, Bob will pay 41 for the minimum total fee.
