“CIVIL ENGINEERING: THEN AND NOW”

According to Sami Maalouf, civil engineering is the oldest engineering discipline. Successful
products of civil engineering are very evident in the pyramids of Egypt, the great wall of China, and the Roman
aqueduct. As an aspiring civil engineer, it is fantastic to see how these infrastructures, even from the old
civilizations, are still alive, have served their purpose for the people, somehow contributed to the country’s
pride and identity, and ultimately have become a significant part of history.
Since civil engineering was discovered, its purpose has been to provide convenience for the
civilization's citizens in terms of designing, constructing, and building public works such as roads, railways,
dams, buildings, bridges, sewers, canals, and more. Although time changes and innovation continue to run
with it, I believe that this is still the primary purpose of civil engineering. Only today, in a world where modern
research, innovation, and fast science are widely used, catering to human needs in terms of civil engineering
was made faster and more efficient. Current approaches, low-cost and sustainable natural resources, were
also undeniably used.
Civil engineering does not only focus on planning, designing, constructing, and building civil works
but also ultimately considers the safety of the citizens. This is I think the most essential part to keep in mind
and should be the priority throughout the planning process. As technology before are not that advanced as
compared to what we have now, the safety before is not as measurable and avoidable as it is today.
Due to innovation and human demands, civil engineering becomes more and more complex as
time goes by. This is probably the reason why more specific disciplines of civil engineering are emerging.
Building infrastructures to cater to humanity have become so important that it needs to be separated by such
disciplines in order to focus on a piece goal that will contribute to the overall result of the project, and of course,
the main purpose of building something.
How the business real estate are in the modern world. Kung dati focused lang talaga to cater the
needs. But now, it is also used for businesses.
Despite the unending needs of humans and how lavish products of civil engineering, such as the
real estate business is now being marketed worldwide, sustainability should also be considered. After all, the
main purpose of civil engineering is to cater to humanity and ultimately make people safe. Not having
sustainability in natural resources would soon backfire thus civil engineering would be mainly for business only
and not to cater the citizens anymore.
