Why choose Civil Engineering?

For starters, what is civil engineering? Well as stated by (“What is

Civil Engineering?”, 2017) “Civil engineering is everything you see
that's been built around us. It's about roads and railways, schools,
offices, hospitals, water and power supply and much more”. Civil
engineering is the application of physical and scientific principles for
solving the problems of society, and its history is intricately linked to
advances in the understanding of physics and mathematics throughout
history. Because civil engineering is a broad profession, including
several specialized sub-disciplines, its history is linked to knowledge of
structures, materials science, geography, geology, soils, hydrology,
environmental science, mechanics, project management, and other
fields. Basically, the profession is like the instructions and plan of how
to build and innovate our world using the surrounding resources. It
mainly offers comfort and practicality to the masses by the use of its
numerous creations.

There are many types of Civil Engineering sub-disciplines. Some

of them are Construction engineering, Geotechnical engineering, and
Structural engineering. Me, personally, I choose structural engineering
because it mainly focuses on the strength and stability of the structure
which I’m very interested in. To clearly emphasize what is structural
engineering is, (Hibbeler, R.C. 2010) stated that, “Structural
engineering is a sub-discipline of civil engineering in which structural
engineers are trained to design the 'bones and muscles' that create the
form and shape of man-made structures”. This is a very important
discipline since the quality of the building in terms of strength relies on
the structural engineer. But if your main interest is not on the structural
side, you can always consider other disciplines like geotechnical
engineering if you are more into land or forensic engineering if
investigating materials and products is your passion.

(Roberts M., 2018) stated “Their work is all around us”. This
means that in terms of societal benefits, Civil engineering today usually
harbors most of the things you see. Whether if its living on a secure
and convenient home or tanning on a white sandy beach, all that you
feel and experience are thanks to the work of Civil engineering. Also,
Civil engineering is a never-ending evolving career. As time passes
and future comes, more and more innovations will be discovered and
more opportunities will come. Employment of civil engineers is
projected to grow 8 percent from 2020 to 2030, about as fast as the
average for all occupations. About 25,000 openings for civil engineers.
If you want to be a part of something that is enjoyed and admired by
many, then be a Civil Engineer.
If you worry about the salary, don’t worry since according to (Best
Jobs U.S. News, 2020) “Civil Engineers made a median salary of
$88,570 in 2020. The best-paid 25 percent made $115,110 that year,
while the lowest-paid 25 percent made $69,100”. This explains that
Civil engineering is one of the high paying jobs in the U.S. and also the
world. In Countries outside of the U.S., Middle-Eastern countries such
as the U.A.E. are the big men in harboring Civil engineering jobs. The
UAE offers many opportunities for U.S. companies in the design and
construction sectors. The UAE’s construction sector is anticipated to
attain moderate post- pandemic growth over the coming years. The
UAE government focuses on investment in energy and infrastructure
including transportation, utilities, decarbonization, renewable and
nuclear energy generation, and resolving the ongoing water scarcity.
The significant commitment and resources of the government leads to
the development of various mega-project opportunities for construction
and engineering companies in the UAE. Recent major projects
announced include the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company’s (ADNOC)
Al-Nouf seawater treatment plant, Dubai Municipality’s plan to build a
strategic sewerage tunnel, and other mega construction projects like
the redevelopment of Mina Rashid in Dubai, and the Dubai
International Financial Centre Expansion 2.0. These are just some of
the few examples of U.A.E.’s plans. In the future, more projects and
discoveries will come.
In conclusion, Civil engineering is a very interesting and a
remarkable career path. If you are a Civil Engineer, then you can be a
part something meaningful and evolving. Choose Civil Engineering so
you can put your mark in the world through building and be admired by
many.
