Explain how flooding is being managed in Bangladesh and evaluate its effectiveness

Bangladesh provides many services to help the population with flooding in the flood action plan,
these include short- and long-term solutions. The flood action plan was made after the excessive
flooding of 1997 and 1998.

Short term actions include sending rescue boats, this may be very effective in the way that it has the
potential to save many lives and save stranded people but unfortunately it does not prevent flooding
and there is a capacity of how many people these boats can carry, so it can’t help everyone.
Another action the government has took is the sending of emergency supplies, in the form of food,
clean water and medicine, this is very useful for people in poverty or homeless but once they run out
of supplies that’s it, you can only get supplies for a limited time, and it does not help stop flooding,
one more action the government takes is the construction of flood shelters , these provide shelter
for the homeless and those who have lost their homes, this is a very good action that the
government has taken as it can save thousands of lives, and provide support for countless people

Some long-term actions include the building of dams, the country benefits by not only does it
prevent flooding it also provides irrigation for farmers in the dry season, but unfortunately dams are
very expensive to build, can cause people to be displaced and Dams may cause increases in water
sourced illnesses like typhus, typhoid fever, malaria and cholera. Another natural long-term action is
the placing of a layer of shells or concrete Infront of the coast than oyster larvae floating in the
ocean attach to it and start to grow making a reef, than within months sand starts building up
behind it than vegetation like mangrove can be grown, than when a storm hits these trees take the
brunt of the blow and the dike holds, and also organisms like fish and crabs start living in this new
ecosystem, creating for the added benefit of increased fishing and more food. Another option would
be afforestation to increase interception but it could take years to grow to a stage where they make
a noticeable difference.
