The first positive impact of computers on a child’s development is to boost their intelligence.

In
a study conducted by Cornell University in 2003, the IQ scores of children in the 21 st century are
currently higher than their previous generation (Lang, 2003). The result was generated and
analysed from 9,000 psychologist special education assessments in the US as children now who
approach computers at an early age than their ancestors are more likely to perform better in the
IQ test. Moreover, the moderate use of computers to play games allows the young to practice and
enhance many skills such as problem-solving, flexibility, or strategic planning (Subrahmanyam
et al., 2000). For example, Nintendo’s Brain Age is designed to train and facilitate brain
functionality by offering several activities related to mental math, reading speed, and
concentration (Keeley, 2020). Hence, by practicing many capabilities through computer games
which have always been exciting for children, they could build on their intelligence.

The second advantage brought to children when making use of computers is learning
enhancement. With the availability of the Internet which is a huge source of information and
knowledge, young learners could access to widen their knowledge in various fields including
languages, or mathematics. The proper use of computer technology during preschool years is
found to facilitate self-learning practices thereby strengthening the learning process (Kayaduman
& Saglam, 2017). There are now many programs, software, or applications that are developed to
improve either literacy or numeracy capabilities for learners of different ages starting from 2
years old. Besides, under the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, education for children is not
affected as lessons are offered online. By learning online, young learners avoid direct contact in
public space that reduces their risk to get infected by a coronavirus. Additionally, with the use of
computers and the internet, learners have more opportunities to various courses through distance
mode. Overall, the availability of computer technology makes learning more diverse and
accessible.
