BRIEF HISTORY of BADMINTON

Ancient time- ancient Egypt Asia and Europe(Greece)


-played the ancients but still unknown and unlabeled to be a
form of sport/game. Identical but not exactly the same with
today’s badminton we know.
2000 years ago- from the ancient time, badminton continuously update
itself likewise how other sports evolved. It’s largely seen develop
among European countries.
1600- this unknown game stayed in progress in Europe as it dominates and
widely played by the western countries.
Mid- 19 Century-likewise to the old Philippine, India has been colonized
by the British empire too and as how colonizing bring impact to
one’s country, they have spread their norms, ways and etc; and one
of that was this sprouting game they called battledore and
shuttlecock, and later on called “Poona” based on a town where the
British Empire military stayed.
1867- 1 rules of Poona are created.

1873-when the British empire military return to their home land, they introduce
Poona to Duke of Beaufort’s Gloucestershire.
Poona was played by the aristocrats and elite families of Europe and rename
Poona to “Badminton” (they got its name to the badminton house where they
played Poona)
1877- the start of club games.
1934- IBF- International Badminton Federation
BWF- Badminton World Federation (the same with IBF/other name of IBF)
The year were the governing body of badminton was founded inclusion of 9 countries
namely: England, Ireland, Wales, Holland, Denmark, Canada, New Zealand, Scotland
and France.
1936- India joined the IBF to be one of the governing countries.
1948- first IBF tournament. The four tournament was: Thomas Cup(men), Uber
Cup(women), Sudirman Cup(mixed) and World
Championship(individual).
1972- Munich Olympics (they demonstrated the game badminton for full
acceptance and employment for the Olympics game.
1992- Olympic games at Barcelona Spain, the first play.
1996- Atlanta Olympic games (after every 4 years, Olympics is held to a chosen
country).
1998- Paralympics (games for disabled) of badminton held at Netherlands.
Badminton
-early dated in Asia (India under British rule and Europe.
-battledore and shuttlecock (the first name of badminton)
-International Badminton Federation (IBF)- the governing body of badminton-1934
-this sport can be played in doubles and singles both recreational and professional.

Equipment:
1. Shuttlecock- also called as “birdie”
-materials used can be natural or synthetic (plastic).
-it has cork base with thin feathers.
-weight is 4.75-5.50g tail/
feather
2 types: a. synthetic
b. feather

2. Racket- (head, stringed area, throat, shaft, handle and frame)

Techniques/Skills/Strokes:
1. Grip- badminton is a wrist work sport
2 kinds:
a. forehand
b. backhand
2. Serve- the shots that start the game/play.
Type of serve:
a. low serve- played gently over net to land at the front of your opponent’s service court.

b. high serve-played powerfully upward.

c. flick serve- played upward, but more shallow than the high serve.

d. drive serve- “low flying” to hit straight at the opponent.


3. Net Shot- stroke aimed at the front area of the court for the opponent to play with the net.

4. Smash- “killing stroke” racket held with a straight arm, flying up to hit the shuttle.

5. Clear- “defensive stroke” brings the shuttle in the high and allows player to return at the
center/ middle.
Types: overhead and underarm
a. overhead

Court Dimension:
1. Court- must be smooth but not slippery.
- green color for the eyes comfort.
2. Net- made of fine tanned cord with a neck of less than 15mm but more than
20mm, 6.1 m firm
stretched from post to post.
-net from the surface is 1.524 m at the center.
3. Post- place on the sideline center and side of boundary/middle.
-1.55m high
-should be vertical.

Faults: serving, shuttle play, and game play.
