March 24, 8:00p.m, 1987
Dear Diary,
Today I felt the volcano
grumbling a lot. The Mauna
1 eruption was in 1843. Now I
Loa Volcano here in Hawaii
is one of the largest volcanos
in our planet . Since my dad is
a scientist he says we have to
go to my aunt’s house that lives
in the in city of Hilo beside
were we live we are safe from
any danger. The lava will hit
our house so it is not safe to
stay where we are. I2

Loa volcano has erupted 33
recorded times that it has
erupted. The first recorded

need to stop writing to pack up
my things because tomorrow
we leave for Hilo.
March 25, 5:00p.m,1984
Dear Diary,
Today my dad told me that the
eruption of Mauna Loa started
at 1:25 a.m. in the morning.
4The lava of the eruption was
traveling to the
northeastward of Hawaii. At
2:00 we went to see our house
and the back yard was all
burned so we had to move to
my aunt’s house until they
repaired it. My dad figured

out the first city to be burned
was Moku’aweoweo. The 6
fountains of lava were 10-
50m high. In the beach in my
aunt’s house in Hilo I saw the
volcano in the distance and that
made me miss my house even
more. As time passed I
wondered how long would it be
until it stoped.
April 15, 10:00p.m, 1984
Today the eruption completely
ended. My dad says the

volcano is active which means
it will erupt in the future.
8The eruption reached a lot of
land because it takes up more
than half of the island of
Hawaii.
I am really happy to be back
home again. I hope there is not
an eruption like this one soon.
9Mauna Loa is a shield
volcano and this volcanos are
not so likely to erupt, but not
Mauna Loa. God is really
good and that is why he let us
be alive today.
