VIII. LEARNING EXPERIENCES:

1.1 INTRODUCTION
A. Engage

After reading the lesson, you should be able to:

1. Recognize the importance of the humanities.
2. Understand that humanities and sciences can be integrated.
3. Identify various contemporary art forms and their practices from the various regions.

B. Explore

The humanities are studies about human culture, such as literature, philosophy, and history.
Studying the humanities gives you general knowledge, but not a practical trade - you probably
wouldn’t study humanities at beauty school.
If you’re studying to be a dentist or a blacksmith, you’re learning to be something in
particular. Studying the humanities is different. The humanities provide general knowledge about the
best accomplishments of human beings throughout history. Learning the works of Shakespeare,
Plato, and Beethoven is part of the humanities. The humanities make a person educated, but not
necessarily for a specific profession. Most people require a more specific area of study beyond the
humanities.

C. EXPLAIN
Art is a fraction of a bigger branch of discipline: the humanities. Now, what is humanities?

The term HUMANITIES refers to the study of the human experience – how people process and
record their thoughts, beliefs, and longings. Humanities include philosophy, history, literature, art, music,
and language as their modes of expression. Through these, we get to know how others have lived and
thought about the challenges of life. From them, we get to decide what is important in our lives and what
we can do to make our lives better.
Humanities coexist with another branch of discipline. If you will notice, the subjects in school are
classified into two general types: the sciences and the humanities. The sciences deal with the object
study of the external world – what we see in it and all processes that happen within it.
On the other hand, humanities deal with the expression of the internal world of a person, a world
where everything is subjective. This internal world includes a person’s emotions, dreams, and
aspirations.
While the sciences are precise and structured, the humanities are not as accurate or structured.
Moreover, the sciences are objective, giving out facts; while the humanities are subjective, expressing
personal views and opinions. Science can be measured while humanities are more difficult to measure; it
is easier to grade science projects than works of art. Furthermore, the scientists think up ways to make
life easier and comfortable; artists imagine ways to make life delightful and pleasing.
Although the sciences and humanities are two entirely different disciplines, both are needed to
provide a balanced knowledge of the world. Oftentimes, the two can also be integrated to create
something that is both functional and delightful. Take a building’s architecture, for example. Science is
used to construct a building that can withstand all sorts of calamities, but Humanities may also be
implemented to create its artistic design.
The integration of different disciplines is common in art, specifically in contemporary art where
diversity and eclecticism are encouraged.
In contemporary art, confirming to artistic norms is no longer significant.

D. Elaborate

The arts are usually considered as part of the humanities. These include visual arts such as
painting and sculpture, as well as performing arts such as theatre and dance, and literature. Other
humanities such as language are sometimes considered to be part of the arts, for example as the
language arts.

1.2 CONTEMPORARY ART

A. Engage

After reading the lesson, you should be able to:

1. Acknowledge the significance of Philippine contemporary arts.
2. Reflect on the art forms found in one’s community (past and present)
3. Understand the difference of contemporary art to modern art.

B. Explore

It is common tendency to describe the present as “modern”. being modern means being up
to date and technologically advanced. Often, being modern is equated with being contemporary.
Art that is new or current is also often referred to as “modern” as opposed to “traditional” or
“conservative. In other words, in everyday parlance, the terms are interchangeable.
In this lesson, you will learn that the terms modern and contemporary refer to vastly different
periods. Modern art is not the same as Contemporary Art, although they could share some
characteristics, sources and influences. As you will come to realize and learn as you go along, it
is also possible to integrate and transform elements from Modern Art into Contemporary Art.

C. Explain

Contemporary Art is the art that springs out of the present-day events and passions of the society. It
is the newest form of art, amusing people from the middle to the late 20th century up to this very minute.
Authorities in the arts place the emergence of contemporary art sometime during the start of
postmodernism in the West, around the late 1970’s. this was the time when artists reacted to the previous
art period called modernism, whose idea of using a pure, simplified, and a streamlined form and style was
fundamental in creating something new at that time. This gave birth to the idea that “less is more”.
Contemporary art is produced by the 21st century artists living in the postmodern age. It functions in a
global society that is culturally diverse and technology-oriented. For one thing, it provides instances for
people to reflect and respond to contemporary social concerns and issues pertinent to themselves and to
the world. For another thing, it is a combination of mixed styles, materials, techniques, and concepts that
challenges tradition. It has gone into the mainstream and into the communities. It has become a
collaborative process and the audience plays an active role in reacting and constructing meaning about
the work of art.
It is good to study contemporary arts because you are surrounded by art in our everyday life, in mass
media, and even in social media. However, it is not enough to see or hear them. You have to understand
what they mean and how they affect your life. You have to ask yourself if everything that you see and hear
is good for you. Therefore, you have to learn to sift through the diverse sights and sounds to find out their
worth. You have to discriminate between good and bad art, for what is truly beautiful is in knowing the
arts.
Contemporary art is essential to you not only because it belongs to your time, but it also serves as a
form of expression of the people’s present feelings and longings.
Contemporary works of art are the means through which the artists of today communicate their
sentiments.

CONTEMPORARY ART VS. MODERN ART

In grade 10, you have come across the different art forms of the Modern Era. You have learned about
the movements, the artists, and the other by-products of the late 1800s up to the mid-20th century. You
have discovered that breaking away from the traditional art styles started in this period.
This divergence of the modern art from the norms of its former periods is similar to the unorthodox
movement of contemporary art. In fact, the two periods are similar in so many ways that people
oftentimes have mistakenly interchanged them. This is understandable; after all, the definition of the
words “contemporary” and “modern” is even the same. In this regard, what makes modern art and
contemporary art different from each other?

==============================================================================

*This material is for Easter College Senior High School Students. No part of this material may be reproduced in any form
or by means or otherwise without the prior written permission of the creator.

Perhaps the main distinction between modern and contemporary art is the time period in which they
have existed. Modern art emerged in the late 1800s and continued to grow for more or less a century. It
5

slowly waned in the middle to late 20th century when postmodernism came to light. Postmodernism then
gave birth to what we know now as contemporary art. This art exists up to this day, and no one knows
when a new period will arrive to veil contemporary art in its shadow.
Modern art developed as styles and techniques, whereas contemporary means “with the times” (con
tempo). Thus, contemporary art refers to the art of the present time.

Both modern art and contemporary art use modern (in the artist’s time) issues as subjects for their
art works, whether it is a still life, an ordinary daily activity, or a far more serious social issue like human
trafficking or war. Personal thoughts are also common subjects. However, many believe that
contemporary art is more socially conscious than modern art because more social issues have been
realized in the recent decades. Examples of the most popular contemporary subjects are feminism,
globalization, migration, and environmental concerns.
What also makes contemporary art different from modern art and other art periods is its never-ending
originality. It is the form of art which one cannot easily classify. Modern art, although freer than the older
periods, paved the way to now popular movements.

INTEGRATIVE ART
In contemporary art, not only movements can be integrated into an artwork. Even seemingly different
art categories can be melded together to produce an integrated or combined art.
This “crossbreeding” in the contemporary scene has resulted in a hybrid art called integrative art.
These art forms are interactive and multi-disciplinary in nature, that is, consisting of ideas and practices
from different branches of learning – the outcome, being the unity of separate areas of learning.
Earlier, we have mentioned the integration of science and humanities – two different disciplines – in
a building’s architecture. This is an example of integrative art.
Another example is a unique presentation of three great Filipino artists coming from three distinct
disciplines – dance, music, and song – performing under one roof at the Cultural Center of the Philippines
(CCP) in Manila. They are Lisa Macuja-Elizalde, prima ballerina; Cecil Lacad, international classical
pianist; and Lea Salonga, international singer and musical actress. They combined their talents to
produce a rare performance. The program called the Legends and the Classics.

There are many manifestations of integrative art in our society nowadays. You just have to have a
keen eye to recognize what in our world are samples of integrative art and what are not.

D. Elaborate
What are the contemporary arts, based on your readings of this lesson, that you see in your
hometown? You may ask your parents/guardians for additional input.

1.3 THE SUBJECT OF ART

6

A. Engage

After reading the lesson, you should be able to:

1. Distinguish between subject and theme.
2. Describe the four ways of dealing with a subject.
3. Appreciate the subjects of art.

B. Explore

Look around you and identify the things that you see. Examples: table, laptop cellphone,
paper , the door, the wall and the like.
The subject of art can be anything under the sun.A subject of art is any person, object, scene
or event that describes or represented in a work of art. Examples are: The school, Ma’am Rouilla,
Covid19, the mask, lyrics of a song, Orientation Program, the sunset and many many more.
In this lesson, you will learn the two kinds of art and the different ways or styles of depicting a
subject.

C. Explain

To create your own contemporary piece, you must fully understand what makes an
artwork a true art. You must first explore the subject of art.

Every work of art has a subject.

A song may contain lyrics of devotion directed to a certain person. A novel may talk
about the results of war. A painting may show a scene in nature. Every work of art – regardless of the
period in which it belongs – has a subject, the very core of its conception.
Generally speaking, a subject or topic is any person, animal, thing, or issue that is
described or represented in a work. It usually generates the question, What is it? Because people
expect to see or hear subjects that they can recognize or are familiar to the. Subject is different from
theme or content (substance); theme is the recurring idea or element in a work of art. The theme
refers to the ideas, thoughts, and feelings of the artists.
Everything under the sun is considered a subject in the arts – from the simplest
idea (e.g., happiness) or an object (e.g., a wine bottle) to the most complicated ones, like
philosophical thoughts or dream capes. In visual design, artworks with subjects
that are recognizable are called realistic, representational, or objective art. Those that are not
recognizable are nonrepresentational or nonobjective art.

In visual design, there are different ways or styles of depicting a subject. Get to know these
styles through the works of art of various Filipino contemporary artists.

1. Realism
- The first style is realism in which the subject is done the way it actually looks.

7

2. Distortion
- The second is distortion wherein the artist uses his or her imagination and alters the
subject according to his or her desire.

3. Abstraction
- The third is abstraction wherein the artist breaks apart a subject and rearranges it in a
different manner.
In science, it is the process of analysis and synthesis. Pablo Picasso innovated this style
in the early 1900s.

4. Non-objectivism
- The fourth style is nonobjectivism wherein there is totally no subject at all – just an
interplay of pure elements like line, shape, or color, and so on.

With regard to subject or theme, the Filipino contemporary artists are now conscious of their
indigenous roots. Granting that the Philippines has been colonized for over 400 years and impacted by
Spanish and American cultures, the contemporary Filipino artists are veering away from these influences.
However, they accept the fact that these are part of the Philippines’ historical identity. They are
embedded in the country’s culture. Moreover, these artists are conscious that they are no longer subject
to western ideas, concepts, and forms.
As discussed earlier, themes that are prevalent in the contemporary art scene in the regions are
responses to social, economic, and political issues, ethnic and indigenous concerns, and current events.
Other subject matters also considered are Philippine folklore, mythology, and philosophical thoughts.
Some subjects in the visual arts that continue to be favoured are still life, landscapes, genre scenes,
portraits, and Philippine fiestas and landmarks. Additional subjects are those concerning superstitions
and the supernatural. All these are the subjects that have helped developed the Filipino’s sense of
national identity.
Aside from these, avant-garde styles are used by daring and innovative artists in all the art forms.

D. Elaborate

Choose a subject of art that very important to you or say has a meaning or an impact to you as an
individual. Use any one of the ways of presenting it as discussed above.

E. Evaluation. See last page for your activity.
