READING AND WRITING SKILLS

2022-2023

Midterm Period
(Week 7, Session 3)
Lesson 17: TEXT STRUCTURES: PERSUASION
READING AND WRITING SKILLS
Content Standard: The learner realizes that information in a written text may be selected and organized to
achieve a particular purpose.
Competencies:
- The learner critiques a chosen sample of each pattern of development (text structure)
focusing on information selection, organization, and development.
- Compare and contrast patterns of written texts across disciplines.
- Text Structure: Persuasion

LESSON OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the lesson, students are expected to:

1. identify and distinguish the different patterns of development (text structure) in writing
across disciplines – with a specific focus on Persuasion;
2. critique a chosen sample of each pattern of development; and
3. apply appropriate use of pattern of development in a written text

INTRODUCTION TO PATTERNS OF DEVELOPMENT IN WRITING

Every text we encounter or read, especially those that are used and taught in schools, are built in
a way that has a certain structure to it. This structure acts as a “pattern” that we can easily follow.
These patterns allow us to understand a reading material easier and better, because it makes us
feel guided, and not lost, of what we are reading. This “guided” feeling from knowing the pattern
of a text makes us become better aware of the overall flow, direction, and organization of the text
we are tasked to read. Being aware of these things leads to reading with a good comprehension of
the text.

There are different patterns of how a text can be written in. These patterns can be any of the
following: Narration, Description, Definition, Classification (or Exemplification), Comparison and
Contrast, Cause and Effect, Problem-Solution, and Persuasion. We call these as “Patterns of
Development in Writing.”

This lesson will focus on PERSUASION as a Pattern of Development in Writing.

READING AND WRITING SKILLS
2022-2023

Writing can be a powerful tool for many reasons and purposes. As what were previously discussed
in our earlier lessons, writing can be essential in telling a story, identifying causes and problems,
suggesting solutions, explaining effects, among many others. The last of which that will be covered
in our series of lessons for Pattern of Development in Writing is Persuasion.

Persuasion, specifically in writing, is the ability to sound believable or convincing. Persuading our
audience through writing requires us to lay out the best arguments or opinions to win our
audiences, who have their own existing opinions, to agree with us, or to change their existing
opinions and eventually side with us. Persuasive writing is you winning your readers to be on your
side, or to be on your team of whatever it is you are discussing in your article.

Most persuasive writing is done with a lot of arguments and opinions.

Technically speaking, an argumentative essay is persuasive writing. So is editorials or opinion
columns in newspapers or magazines. Some however, does the “selling” style of convincing,
specifically if the purpose of the persuasion is for business-related matters, like selling a product
or building a market network.

This lesson will help you prepare and critique PERSUASION as a writing structure under Patterns
of Development in Writing.

PERSUASION

Persuasion is a writing strategy which involves presenting a position or standpoint which is a

product of careful research and supported with valid claims in order to change the attitudes
or behavior of others.

In a persuasive paragraph, the writer must provide the readers with motives of believing by making
an appeal to their basic needs or desires and to satisfy these.

WRITING A PERSUASIVE TEXT:

(For positioning an Opinion or a Stand on an issue)

1. Choose a position you truly believe and stand by with. You should think about the issue
really well. Read, ask, and research. Pick a side you wish to advocate because you fully and
truly believe in it.

2. Understand and know your audience. Your audience will not just be people who also have
the same stand as yours with the issue you’re having an opinion about. Some of the
audience will be people who are opposite to your opinion. Your job is to win them. And for
those who have the same opinion as yours. Your job is to make them agree more and feel
more “solid and assured” about having the same opinion as you do.

3. Identify the most convincing evidence or supporting documents to back your
arguments or opinions. Make the best ones count the most! Again, read, ask, and
research!

4. Be prepared for a counterattack. Learn and think of ways to address the key points of
the opposing sides as well.

5. Use valid supporting sources as your means of backing up your opinions such as:
logical reasoning, validated personal anecdotes and experiences, scientific evidence (data,
statistics, published studies, etc.), and/or factual information both from published sources
and experts.

WRITING A PERSUASIVE TEXT:

(Specifically for selling a Business Product or Service)

1. Choose a product or service you truly believe in because it simply works. You need to
defend and convince people to try something not because you will be paid for it, or because
of its popularity, but because it is something that is tried and tested by you. You have
personal knowledge that this product or service really works.

2. Understand and know your audience. Your audience will not just be people who are
already using the product or service, but may also be people who have not used it and
would want to try but are hesitant. Your job is to make them finally try it because of the
way you will convince them. And for those who have been using the product or service as
you do, your job is to make them keep using it and keep enjoying it to the point where they
even recommend it to other people as well.

3. Identify the most important advantages or edge of the product or service you are
recommending. What makes it different? What sets it apart from the rest? What makes it
stand out among the rest of similar products or services?

4. Compare it with other similar products and services. Do a thorough point by point
comparison and contrast of this product or service against other products or services that
are similar. Why is better than the others?

5. Use valid supporting sources as your means of backing up your claims such as: logical
reasoning, validated personal anecdotes and experiences, scientific evidence (data,
statistics, published studies, etc.), and/or factual information both from published sources
and experts.

convincingly, like recommending someone to really use it. Write a short paragraph with at least 5
sentences persuading people to really use it because you know it actually works.

Also, cut out a picture of that product and paste it above your short paragraph.

PERSUASION TEXT STRUCTURE EXERCISE 3

Instructions: Read the sample persuasive article about a news organization called “Children’s
Express” on the next page. As you read, be able to identify the position or stand of the writer and
the arguments used to support this position or stand. Write it in the space provided below.

Children’s Express was a news organization for young journalists. These journalists
were age 8 through 18. They researched and reported on issues and events of the
current times. Topics include family life, education, children’s rights and the
environment.
Children’s Express has a unique mission. It gave young people an opportunity to
express themselves about current and major affairs and issues. This happens rarely in
our society. Decisions that directly impact children are often made without their input.
As one young journalist said, “A solitary voice is not enough to make adults’ heads turn.
What we need are the voices of many children, united as one.”
The articles written by young people for Children’s Express appeared in major
newspapers throughout the United States and England. Children’s Express no longer
exists, but we need more organizations like it.

READING AND WRITING SKILLS
2022-2023

During the 11 years I spent studying in St. Theresa’s College (STC) Quezon City, an
all-girls Catholic school, I felt that I was programmed to function and think in a certain
way.

Even during my development stages, I was told that I had to think, behave and
interpret my surroundings in ways that made me believe it would be beneficial for my
future.

I was told a plethora of reminders about how to “behave like a lady”: Your skirts
must fall 2 inches below the knees; anything shorter is indecent. Don’t even think about
cutting your hair shorter than necessary; you are a woman and your hairstyle should be
as feminine as possible. Keep your hands in a prayer position and don’t put them down
until the Mass is over; you’re a Catholic. I never thought there was anything wrong with
what I was taught for nearly half of my life, because I was made to think that I would be
a disgrace to society if I didn’t follow the rules.

Because I was a student in an exclusive school that has produced hundreds of

successful and influential women, my teachers drilled into my mind that in whatever
way I behave, I would be carrying the “good image” of my alma mater. But I have
regretted bowing my head in surrender, never thinking for myself and realizing that I
was a victim of an abusive institution that remains in power.

In elementary, I remember standing under the heat of the sun, listening as a priest
lectured us about the message of that first Friday’s Gospel. I did not remember what the
homily was about, but what my memory replays so clearly is the voice of one of our
religion teachers who appeared to resent the behavior of our upperclassmen.

She looked at us, eyes stern and with a burning desire to punish anyone who
would object, and said: “Don’t be like your Grade 6 ates; look at them complaining when
they’re supposed to be fervently praying.” At our grade school graduation ceremony in
2009, we were so eager to embrace one another as a form of congratulating ourselves
for reaching another milestone in our lives that we could not wait until we were formally
dismissed. In front of hundreds of parents, one of our superiors told us that we did not
deserve to graduate. In high school, I remember students who had to hold hands in
secret and keep their interactions to a minimum because we all knew that even a hug
that lasted for a few seconds more than what was “acceptable” could mean sanctions
and shaming. We were often shamed if we did not do well in class, and some of our
grades were based on how fast we could get a computer program running.

READING AND WRITING SKILLS
2022-2023

We were built to function as mechanical humans with impossibly high IQs, and
this affected the way we lived and worked for years. Some of us haven’t even recovered.

During my senior year, a report surfaced about how a student from STC Cebu was
barred from attending her graduation ceremony after the administration found photos
of her wearing a bikini online, saying that she had violated a rule in the student
handbook that bans posting pictures that show “ample body exposure.” I found myself
enraged that the school would meddle that deep just to maintain an image that was
already tainted by the people in power. Didn’t they teach us to freely express ourselves?
But I also found myself doubting: Am I supposed to be mad at them? Am I supposed to
fight this obvious display of power-tripping?

We were taught to behave so that society may gaze at us and think that we have
grown into women who deserve to be recognized, but never to fight the institution that
brainwashed us into thinking that we deserved to be punished for thinking differently.
I sometimes blame myself for not realizing that we were in an abusive environment that
promoted victim-blaming and rape culture and instead accepted that this was how
things were supposed to be. Students were to be punished for behaving the opposite of
what the student handbook dictated, while the very institution that was in power was
to remain supreme and unharmed, and allow abusers to walk free and guiltless about
the trauma they had caused. I didn’t know then that we were living in a miniature
version of “the real world.” But STC needs to know that its successful alumnae were not
products of their Catholic school education alone. They have greatly influenced the
younger generation precisely because they had their own beliefs that did not
necessarily agree with the school’s values.

To my upperclassmen who insist that this was “not the STC they grew up with,”
we need you to understand that the times are changing and that loving an institution
does not mean that you disregard its flaws and allow it to operate in a continuous cycle
of abuse.

To my underclassmen who spoke up about cases of sexual harassment and abuse,

I admire your relentless courage and how your collective voice has exposed a culture of
hypocrisy and is now pressuring STC to do better.
I am glad that we grew up to become the opposite of how we were taught to behave,
and that there is no absolute “handbook” that will ever dictate that we must cower in
fear.
