1. Can you differentiate an absolute extrema from a local extrema? Describe.
Yes, we can differentiate an absolute extrema from a local extrema through using the graph of function f below for the interval [a,e], we can visually see that the highest point is when x=e and the lowest point is when x=d. 2. How are you going to find the critical points of a function over a closed interval? The first step that I am going to do is evaluate f at the endpoints x=a and x=b. Second step is, I will find all critical points of f that lie over the interval (a,b) and evaluate f at those critical points. Then, the final step is compare all values found in (1) and (2). From the location of absolute extrema, the absolute extrema must occur at endpoints or critical points. Therefore, the largest of these values is the absolute maximum of f. The smallest of these values is the absolute minimum of f. 3. How will you use the critical points to locate absolute extrema over a closed interval? After I find the critical points of a function by setting f’(x)=0, I will solve for the values of x that satisfies the equation Then, evaluate the original function f(x) at the retained critical points and the endpoints of the closed interval. Lastly, I’ll identify the absolute maximum and absolute minimum.
