 What is Literature?
Literature is a broad term used to refer
to written works, such as books,
magazines, short stories, plays, and
poems. Literature can provide insight
into the human experience and can be
used as a way to explore ideas, express
emotions, and tell stories.
It has been a powerful tool for
expressing and exploring our humanity.
When discussing literature, one can
talk about the author's style, the
themes explored in the work, the
characters and their motivations, and
the historical context in which the
work was written.

An epic is a long narrative poem that usually deals with important
subjects matter like events of cultural significance and heroic actions.
Though it is technically a poem, they switch scenes and feature dialogue,
making them quite unlike any other form of poetry in the literary world.

Nueva Vizcaya where the Magat River
can be found.

 Ibanag unoni
Ibanag "unoni" or proverbs are either in
prose or poetry. They are preachy and
pedagogic as well as theological.
 What is Ibanag?
• The Ibanag or Ybanag are concentrated on the Provinces
of Cagayan, Nueva Vizcaya, Isabela. The Ybanag are among
the minority of Filipino people that live along the banks of
Cagayan River. They are the most assimilable and adaptable
among the groups of the Filipino. On Cagayan, Ybanag are
more found in Tuguegarao, Abulug, Pamplona, Camalanugan,
Lal-lo, Amulung, Iguig, Penablanca, and Aparri towns.

 Awan tu umune ta uton
ng ari umuluk ta davvun.
(Nobody goes up who does
not come down)
 Awat tu serbi na ru nga kukua,
nu marake i pinangngapangngua.
(Wealth is useless if character
is worthless.)
 Ibanag palavvun
A "palavvun" (riddle) is any misleading,
mystifying or puzzling question to be
solved or guessed, either as a mere game or
a more serious challenge. For Ibanags, it is
both a folk amusement or a mental
excursion. It is aimed at relaxation,
entertainment and at pacifying anger and
feuds.
 Examples of
ibanag palavvun
 Nu magitubang atannang, nu
manaddak, alinno.
(When it sits, it is tall, when it
stands it is small.)
 Sinni pano y tadday mga babay
Kanan na baggi na a maguroray
(Who can be the lovely lady
That eats her own body)
