Question 10 1966.Calculate the Max.

allowable Sag for a copper conductor of an overhead

transmission line operating at 0°C when the span is 120m and it is subjected to a wind pressure
of 700 Pa. The copper conductor has a diam.of 10,4mm ans has a mass of 600kg\1000m and a
breaking load of 26KN. ,Given that the s Sag = WxL2 : E=100CPa and coefficient of
8F
-6
Expansion = 16.7 x 10 .

The act provide that conductors be designed for a wind pressure of 700 Pa on 0.6 of the projected
area ,the factor of safety must not be less than 2 at a temperature of - 5,5’C.
Projected area of one span of conductors
= length of span x 0.6 x diam. of conductor.
= 120 x 0.6 x 0.0104 m2
Wind force = wind pressure x projected area
=700 x 120 x 0.6 x 0.0104 = 524.2N
Vertical load = mass of conductor x 9.81 x length of span
600 x 9.81 x 129 = 706.32N
1000
Resultant force √ 524.162 + 706.322 = 879.56 N
The effect of the wind pressure is to increase W by the ratio of:
Resultant load = 879.56
vertical load 706.32
Sag at -5.5°C = W L2 where F is working load = breaking load = 26 =13 KN
8F F.O.S 3
Sag at -5.5°C = 600 x 9.81 x 879.56 x 1202 m = 1.0149m
1000 706.32 8x13 x 103
Alternatively
In formula D = W x L2

Let T = stress x area of x section of conductor where stress = initial stress - change in stress due to
higher temperature.
Initial stress = working load on conductor
x sectional area of conductor
= 13 x10- 3 = 153.033MPa

0.7854 x 0.0104
T = (f1 -ụ t E)area
= 153.033 - 16.7 x 10 - 6 x (0-(-5,5))x 100 x 10 3
= 153.033 - [16,7 x 10-6 x 5,5 x 100x103 ] x area.
= [153.033 - 9,185] x 0.7854 x 0.01042 = 12.22KN
D = W x L2 = 600 x9.81 x 879 533 x 1202 = 1.0796m
