1.7 Determine the total power information for three parallel-


connected loads: load #1, 250 VA, pf = 0.50 lagging; load #2,
180 W, pf = 0.80 leading and load #3, 300 VA, 100 var
(inductive)

Resonance Circuits
2.1. A series RLC Circuit has a resistance of 16 Ω, an inductance of
10 H and a capacitance of 1 F. find the resonance frequency,
quality factor.

2.2. An RLC series circuit is driven by the voltage source E = 20 L0°


V. The frequency of the source is adjusted to be the resonance
frequency of 750 Hz. If R is 10 Ω and XL is 40 Ω find :
a) Xc at resonance .
b) The value of L and C.
c) The Q – factor of this circuit.
d) I , VR , VL and VC at resonance.

2.3. A series RLC circuit has a resonance frequency of 5 KHz, its


capacitive reactance at resonance is 25 Ω, the current measured
in this circuit was 0.1 A when a 2 V source at the resonance
frequency is applied to the circuit. Find :
a) The values or R, L and C.
b) The Q – factor.
c) The magnitude of the voltage across the capacitor.

2.4. A series RLC circuit carries a current of 2 A from a 16 V source


at resonance. If the capacitive reactance at this resonance
frequency is 100 Ω, find the quality factor of this circuit. Find also
the value of the circuit inductor. What is the resonance frequency
of this circuit?

2.5. In an RLC series circuit, the applied source voltage is e(t) = 2 sin
(10,000t), the value of R is 10 Ω and the value of C is 0.1 µF.
Find: a) The value of L that make the circuit resonate at the
source frequency.
b) The RMS Voltages across L and C .
c) The quality factor of the circuit.

Magnetically Coupled Circuits


3.1. When one coil of a magnetically coupled pair has a current 5 A
the resulting fluxes Φ11 and Φ12 are 0.2 mWb and 0.4 mWb,
respectively. If the turns are N1 = 500 and N2 = 1500, find L1,
L2, M, and the coefficient of coupling k.

3.2. Two coupled coils have self-inductances L1 = 50 mH and


L2 = 200 mH, and a coefficient of coupling k = 0.5. If coil 2 has
1000 turns, and i1 = 5 sin 400t A., find the voltage at coil 2 and
the flux Φ1.

3.3. In the coupled circuit shown in Fig (1), find V2 for which I1 = 0.
What voltage appears at the 8 Ω inductive reactance under this
condition?

3.4. For the coupled circuit shown in Fig (2), find the components of
the current I2 resulting from each source V1 and V2.

3.5. In the coupled circuit of Fig (3), find the input admittance
Y1 = I1/V1 and determine the current i1(t) for v1 =√ 2 cos (t).

Three-phase Circuits
4.1. A Y-connected balanced three-phase generator with an
impedance of 0.4 + j 0.3 Ω per phase is connected to a Y-
connected balanced load with an impedance of 24 + j 19 Ω per
phase. The line joining the generator and the load has an
impedance of 0.6 + j 0.7 Ω per phase. Assuming the generator
source voltages as Van = 120 L30° V, find:
a) The line voltages b) The line currents.

4.2. A three-phase, three-wire, ABC system, with an effective line


voltage of 120 V, has three impedances of 5 L45° Ω in a Δ-
connection. Determine the line currents and draw the voltage-
current phasor diagram.

4.3. A three-phase, four-wire, 150-V, CBA system has a Y-connected


load, with ZA = 6 L0° Ω, ZB = 6 L30° Ω and ZC = 5 L45° Ω.
Obtain all line currents and draw the phasor diagram.

4.4. A three-phase, three-wire, ABC system, with an effective line


voltage of 220 V, has three impedances of 5 L45° Ω in a Δ-
connection. Obtain the readings of two wattmeters used to
measure the power.

4.5. A three-phase, three-wire, ABC system has effective line voltage


240 V. Wattmeters in lines A and B read -301 W and 1327 W,
respectively. Find the impedance of the balanced Y-connected
load.
