Object: -
Measurement and comparison of co-efficient of friction of different materials.

Introduction: -
Friction is force that opposes the relative motion between two surface that are in
Contact. The co-efficient of friction of different materials using simple setup.

Materials: -
 TM225 (inclined plane)
 Wooden block
 Different material such as brass or aluminum

Procedure: -
 Adjust the angle on equipment TM225.
 Select the material to be tested and put it on surface of equipment (aluminum,
brass).
 Material should be attached with wooden block and wooden block is used as mass
hanger.
 Let the material slide and repeat this process 2-3 times.
 Calculate the co-efficient of friction for each material using formula F=μ/ R ,where
µ is co-efficient of friction, F is the force required to overcome friction and R is
weight of the block (normal force reaction).

Theory: -
First, we take the equipment TM225 and adjust the angle of inclination of surface so
that material overcome friction. The we select material (aluminum or brass) and put
on the surface and hang a wooden block with it which will hang downward this 2-3
times. We can also calculate the co-efficient of friction by using formula Tanα = µ.

Observation table: -
Object Angle Coefficient of friction

Aluminum block 9° µ = tan9° = 0.158

Brass 15° µ = tan15° = 0.267

Conclusion: -
In conclusion, we can observe that different combination of materials have
different co-efficient of friction. By using this factor engineers can design
sufficient designs of gadget, in which there will be less friction loss and energy.
