Part A READING – Read the passage below and then answer the questions.
Good morning. My name is Ivy, and today I’m going to give you some information
about my family problems.
My mother used to get impatient with me. I guess a lack of communication between
us caused this problem. Last Saturday, there were quarrels between us when she
criticized a dress I was wearing, which was bright orange. I told her that her style was
old-fashioned, which caused an argument. Besides this, she was keeping an eye on
me all the time, which made me feel anxious. Moreover, my father was always busy
seldom talked to me and seldom
because of his long working hours, which made me feel lonely. I thought he didn’t
understand that I encountered a lot of stress at school. I felt helpless about my family problems and
couldn’t concentrate on my studies, then my teacher offered me some help by suggesting that I should
soften my tone when talking to my mother and be more understanding about my father’s hard work. It
was only after doing what my teacher suggested that things gradually improved. Although there are still
conflicts sometimes, I know my parents care about me.
That’s the end of my presentation.

Part C PHONETICS – Vowels
Phonetics is about the sound a letter or a word makes. There are 26 letters in the English alphabet, but each
of them can sound very different.
The International Phonetic Alphabet (I.P.A.) gives every sound a different symbol, not only in English, but in
many languages, to help you speak that language correctly. When you look in a dictionary you will see;
the word, the I.P.A. spelling of the word, the part of speech, and the meaning of that word.

Although there are only 5 vowels in the English language, we can say them in lots of different ways. Two of
those ways are as follows;

In Unit 1 we learned about the sounds that ‘A’ and ‘a’, and ‘E’ and ‘e’ make. Now, we’re going to learn about
the sounds for ‘I’ and ‘i’, and ‘O’ and ‘o’. Look at the words below and circle the ‘Long Sound’ ONLY.
One has been done for you as an example.
