I joined the Public Speaking class of my previous lecturer as a casual

observer. During the lesson, she mainly applied Direct Method as well as Task-
Based Language Teaching (TBL) to instruct and manage class. Since the target of
this course is to provide students useful skills in making effective presentations in
front of the crowd, students were encouraged to speak English and avoid using
their native language. This way, they could improve their confidence and speaking
skill also.
Teacher spent 20 minutes reviewing the contrustion of a model speech. Then, at the
second period, students were divided into a group of three and continously
presented the given topics. This process usually took more than 1 hour. The last
one hour was used to give feedback on student’s performance. The lecturer
objectively evaluated both strengths and limitations of student’s speech. They
would be marked on pronunciation, grammartical structures, ideas, body language
and facial expression. In addition, students received bonus marks on their clothes
and powperpoint also. In general, the class was run smoothly and effectively due to
the combination of both teaching methods. Students found it is intersting to absorb
the knowledge and practice nessesary skills.
However, there were still some points that need to be enhanced in order to get
the best academic performance. For example, using 100% English in teaching may
cause the confused toward students. Some advanced definitions as well as novel
information will not be clearly explained. If I were the lecturer, I would flexibly
use both languages (English and native one). Hence, students can better understand
the lesson. Besides that, during the time other groups conduct their presentation,
the rest of students do not pay attention to them, instead, they do their own stuff
such as using phone or talking with friends. For this problem, I suggest the teacher
ask them to take note of what things other groups have to improve and what points
they did well. Then after the presentation, each group will receive an assessment
from both the teacher and their classmates. As a result, they will improve
themselve better in the next time.
