PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
‘PADA’ YATHRA: A SOCIAL INTERVENTION
The menace of drugs & alcohol abuse is growing in our society. Drug abuse, a
term used for obsessive and excessive use of drugs, is a common problem
these days. Drug abuse or substance abuse refers to the use of certain chemi-
cals for the purpose of creating pleasurable effects on the brain. There are over
190 million drug users around the world and the problem has been increasing at
alarming rates, especially among young adults under the age of 30. Regular use
of drugs is self damaging. It leads to addiction and causes behavioural changes.
Drug abuse particularly impacts the brain and can also lead to other health Dr. P. R. Sreemahadevan Pillai
issues such as kidney failure and heart problem. Heavy alcohol use can damage Principal
all organ systems, but it particularly affects the brain, heart, liver, pancreas and
immune system. Alcoholism can result in mental illness, delirium tremens, Wernicke–Korsakoff syndrome,
irregular heartbeat, an impaired immune response, liver cirrhosis and increased cancer risk. Drinking during
pregnancy can result in fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. Women are generally more sensitive than men to the
harmful effects of alcohol, primarily due to their smaller body weight, lower capacity to metabolize alcohol, and
higher proportion of body fat. In a small number of individuals, prolonged, severe alcohol misuse ultimately leads
to cognitive impairment and frank dementia. To counter the rampant and aggressive impact of these abuses
among our children and youth, it is proposed to have a collective effort in Palakkad district. Ahalia Group is initiat-
ing a long-term project, PALAKKAD AGAINST DRUGS AND ALCOHOL (PADA) with the cooperation of Central and
State Government agencies and NGOs. The following organizations have consented to associate with this
project. We expect many more organizations to join in this noble cause.

1) National Service Scheme (NSS) of the Govt. of India

2) Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK) of the Govt. of India
3) Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) of the Govt. of India
4) Field Publicity Department of the Govt. of India
5) Yodhavu program of the Govt. of Kerala
6) Vimukthi mission of the Govt. of Kerala
7) ASAAD Sena of the Govt. of Kerala
8) Student Police Cadet of the Govt. of Kerala
9) Palakkad District Panchayath
10) Victims Information, Sensitisation, Welfare & Assistance Society (VISWAS), Palakkad, under the
District Administration
11) Palakkad Souhrida Vaedi (PSV)
12) Samagra - Centre for Integrated Human Development
13) Palakkad District Development Initiative (PADDI)
14) Ahalia Youth Against Alcohol & Drugs (YAAD) – Coordinator
PADA is proposing to take up ‘PADA’YATHRA (foot
procession) all over Palakkad District in the months
of May to August 2023, to spread the awareness on
preventing the abuse of drugs and alcohol. These
processions will he held on selected days after-
noons, commencing from an educational institution
or place of importance and culminating at another.
Peoples’ representatives, Government officials,
social workers, teachers, students, artistes, et. al.
will be invited to join this program and the ensuing
performances. We expect all the good hearted
public to promote this social intervention for a better
society.

A LIFE IN CONSTANT REMEMBRANCE OF LORD VISHNU

"The one who meditates upon me with unalloyed devotion by getting rid of the 'doership'
reaches my abode and will never have to return back to this material world thereafter"-
declares Lord Krishna in Bhagavad Gita.In fact reaching his supreme abode is the primary
intention behind every life forms on this earth but due to the various sensual temptations and
the illusory perceptions one often gets swayed away from one's primary purpose thus open-
ing the gates for further rebirths, as stated by Lord himself using the analogy of inverted holy
fig tree. The one who exists on this materialistic realm without understanding the various
spiritual principles in play is verily the most ignorant one, for such a person doesn't have a
contented existence either in this world or the next. Anand Haridas
Asst Prof. - CSE
At one point Lord explains to Arjuna- though there are various paths to reach his abode, bhakti yoga-'a life in
constant remembrance of Vishnu', is the most effective way to attain him and therein gives a divine vision of his
cosmic form that none got to witness before and asks Arjuna to practice severe austerities by constantly remem-
bering his divine cosmic form that doesn't have a beginning, middle or ending. To which Arjuna asks to krishna
-that even after practicing severe austerities by remaining a renunciate on this material realm, if one is still unsuc-
cessful in attaining lord, doesn't one lose his present material life in vain effort. To which lord replies -the spiritual
merits one acquires through the practice of intense spiritual austerities are always carry forwarded to the next life
thus assuring a future birth in a conducive neighbourhood from where one could continue from where one had left
out in the previous life and thus would eventually help one in taking oneself to vaikuntha- the supreme abode.

The mythical pious King Indradyumna had to face a similar predicament who had to incarnate as an elephant-ga-
jendra due to sage agastya's curse in his previous life, but due to the carry forwarded spiritual merits of
Indradyumna he was able to get liberated from the clutches of material world symbolized by -huhu the crocodile
with much ease by the grace of Lord Vishnu, who subsequently took him to the supreme abode- vaikuntha which
eventually came to be known as ‘gajendramoksham’.

One needs a strong purpose rather hard blows to get started with the pursuit of finding God but seldom requires
one to remain merged in God. The Mythical prince -Dhruva is a classic example. Dhruva set out to find Lord Vishnu
after getting severely humiliated by his close associates and thus started intense meditation at a tender age of
five by holding the form of Lord Vishnu in his mind as explained to him by sage narada and was so engrossed in
the meditation that at the end when Lord Vishnu himself appeared in front of Dhruva, by then he himself had
forgotten the reason for starting his meditation in first place and thus couldn't ask for any boon other than making
a wish to Lord to grant him -'a life in constant remembrance of Vishnu'.

One need not be necessarily born in a hermitage or in a family of sages to acquire an unwavering inclination
towards spirituality and spiritual matters. This was unequivocally proved by the mythical child -Prahalada, who by
virtue of birth was a demon, but while still in his mother's womb developed a strong devotion and love towards
Lord Vishnu due to the spiritual discourse offered to his mother by sage Narada. Thus by the age of five itself Prah-
alada had become a renunciate by getting his mind saturated with the thoughts of Lord Vishnu. Subsequently
after slaying of his demoniacal father by Lord Vishnu under the identify of narasimha, Lord Vishnu queried wheth-
er little Prahalada had any wish, to which little Prahalada had only one reply -to grant him 'a life in constant remem-
brance of Vishnu'.

One would often go astray and bewildered whenever fate plays its nasty game. But with the divine grace of Lord
Vishnu even the seemingly most tormentous situation could be converted into a liberating experience as was the
case with ardent Vishnu devotee- Poonthanam, who with unbearable pain after the loss of his child built a 'bhakti
soudham'- house of devotion in the form of ever classic spiritual treatise- 'jnanappana' and opened it for all the
generations alike -living and yet to come. The crux of jnanappana being to -lead ‘a life in constant remembrance
of Vishnu’, over the course of time it acquired the status of a miniature Bhagavad Gita.

The Lord needs to be invoked upon by remembering him always lovingly with utmost purity and devotion by genu-
inely aspiring to get back to his abode and remaining there forever. Those unable to remember him affectionately
can do so even otherwise. Demoniacal mythical characters -kamsa and sisupala attained liberation through
'vaira-bhakthi' that is by leading ‘a life in constant remembrance of Vishnu’ out of fear, grudge and anger towards
Lord. It goes on to show the inclusiveness, greatness and above all the magnanimity of Lord Vishnu, who is said
to take ten steps towards his devotee, when the devotee contemplates taking one step towards him.

The mind takes the shape of whatever entity it is constantly subjected to. Rather mind is similar to a crystal that
that takes on the colour and nature of the object that is placed besides it. Thus when it is immersed in constant
divine thoughts and placed in total surrender at Lord Vishnu's lotus feet it acquires divine nature of Lord Vishnu.
As stated in puranas there is nothing to be mentioned worthwhile in kaliyuga other than the fortune that people
are born with -that they could get liberated easily through bhakti yoga, that is by leading ‘a life in constant remem-
brance of Vishnu’.

The mind is an ever restless entity that finds its seat in the periphery of 'ajna chakra' while in conscious state, in
vishudha chakra while in dreaming state and in anahata chakra while in a state of deep sleep. Thus conquering
the ever restless mind is a herculean task that requires intense concentration. Recital of the 'Vishnusahasran-
amam' - a garland of Lord Vishnu's thousand names is one such endeavour that helps one to lead ‘a life in
constant remembrance of Vishnu’ by getting beyond the three states of mind i.e., wakefulness, dreaming, deep
sleep and to get into the fourth state of 'turiya' and remain there forever by keeping the mind locked in the taber-
nacle of heart by constantly focussing on his various forms that he had assumed from time to time....

(This literary work is a humble offering at Lord Vishnu's lotus feet)
