I. CHOOSE A, B, C, D OR E AS THE BEST ANSWER!

The following explanation text is for number 1-5

Human body is made up of countless millions of cells. Food is needed to build up

new cells and replace the worn-out cells. However, the food that we take must be
changed into substances that can be carried in the blood to the places where they are
needed. This process is called digestion.

The first digestive process takes place in the mouth. The food we eat is broken up
into small pieces by the action of teeth, mixed with saliva, a juice secreted by glands
in the mouth. Saliva contains digestive juice which moisten the food, so it can be
swallowed easily.

From the mouth, food passes through the esophagus (the food passage) into the
stomach. Here, the food is mixed with the juices secreted by the cells in the stomach
for several hours. Then the food enters the small intestine. All the time the muscular
walls of the intestine are squeezing, mixing and moving the food onwards. In a few
hours, the food changes into acids. These are soon absorbed by the villi (microscopic
branch projections from the intestine walls) and passed into the bloodstream.

The following explanation text is for question number 6-10.

BIODIESEL

Biodiesel is a clean burning substitute for petroleum-based diesel fuel. Biodiesel is

made of sustainable materials.

To manufacture Biodiesel, you must first start with raw materials. The raw materials
needed in the production of Biodiesel are a small amount of methanol and a ready
supply of vegetable product. One of the most common vegetables used in the
production of Biodiesel is corn, although depending on the geographic location of the
manufacturing facility many other plants are used as well (rapeseed, soybeans,
flaxseed, etc.). The first step is to use the raw vegetable product to make vegetable oil.
Vegetable oil by itself will not be what you need to power a car, from here it has to be
processed into Biodiesel.

The process for changing vegetable oil into Biodiesel is sometimes called ester
interchange. To complete this process, the vegetable oil has to be combined with a
smaller amount of methanol and then put in the presence of a small quantity of an
alkaline catalyst (for example, 5% to 1% sodium hydroxide). Vegetable oil is made up
of so-called triglycerides, which is a compound of the trivalent alcohol glycerin with
three fatty acids. The goal of ester interchange is to separate the glycerin molecule
from the three fatty acids and replace it with three methanol molecules. This process
then yields roughly 90% Biodiesel and 10% of a glycerin byproduct. The glycerin
byproduct can be used in a number of other chemical processes for different industries.

I don't wanna look at anything else now that I saw you

And now I see daylight, I only see daylight

Luck of the draw only draws the unlucky

And so I became the butt of the joke
I wounded the good and I trusted the wicked
Clearing the air, I breathed in the smoke

Threw out our cloaks and our daggers because it's morning now
It's brighter now, now

How A Tsunami Happens

A tsunami is a series of waves generated when water in a lake or a sea is rapidly

displaced on a massive scale. The tsunami is also often mistaken as a tidal wave.
However, the actual tsunami wave has nothing to do with the events of the tide.
Therefore, oceanographers prefer to use the term seismic sea waves to refer to the
tsunami, which is scientifically more accurate.

A tsunami can be generated when the sea floor abruptly deforms and vertically
displaces the overlying water. Such large vertical movements of the earth’s crust can
occur at plate boundaries. Great subduction of earthquakes is particularly effective in
generating tsunami, and occur where denser oceanic plates slip under continental
plates. As the displaced water mass moves under the influence of gravity to regain its
equilibrium, it radiates across the ocean like ripples on a pond.

Tsunami always brings great damage. Most of the damage is caused by the powerful,
high-speed huge mass of water behind the initial wave front, as the height of the sea
keeps rising fast and floods enormously into the coastal area.

III. SHORT ANSWERS

Complete the following sentence based on the information from the text

Based on the cause of the occurrence, earthquakes can be classified into two, namely
tectonic earthquakes and volcanic earthquakes. Tectonic earthquakes occur because
the layer of the earth's crust becomes precarious or tender so that it experiences
movement. "Tectonic Plate" theory contains an explanation that our earth consists of
several layers of rock. Most of the crustal area will be washed away and float in
layers, like snow. This layer moves so slowly that it breaks and collides with one
another, which is why earthquakes occur.

28. Soft earth’s crust that experiences … cause tectonic earthquakes.

29. The area of earth that is washed away is ….

30. An explanation text is divided into two parts, namely general statement and

IV. ESSAY

Read the text to answer question number 31-32.

How Do People Get Infected by COVID-19?

From the beginning of 2020, the world has been in an emergency status
following the outbreak of an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory
syndrome 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The disease, known as Coronavirus disease 2019
(COVID-19), as of today (May 2020) has killed 247 thousand people worldwide.
There are 3.5 million confirmed cases in 210 countries and territories around the world.
But how do people get infected by COVID-19?
COVID-19 is a respiratory disease for it attacks organs that are responsible for
respiratory system. Therefore, it is mainly transmitted through "respiratory droplets",
droplets of virus-laden mucus that are ejected when symptomatic people sneeze or
cough. To prevent these droplets from falling on people is why it is advised for us to
maintain 2-metre distance from each other. Wearing face masks is also important to
prevent ejection the droplets and reduce the chance of incidentally inhaling them.
Transmission by contact is also a possible route of the infection. Viral particles
from the respiratory droplets land on an object, someone touches the object, then
touches their mouth, eyes, or nose. The virus then slips into their body via their
mucous membrane, infecting the person.
More studies are still being conducted to this day to learn more about the virus,
how it is spread, and how to stop it. So far, the most effective way to cut the routes of
transmission is by maintaining physical distance and avoiding prolonged contact.

31. Why Covid-19 is also called a respiratory disease?

32. “…droplets of virus-laden mucus that are ejected when symptomatic people
sneeze or cough.” Define the meaning of symptomatic people in your own words!
