Lord Curzon partitioned the province of Bengal in 1905 for administrative purposes, creating a new province of East Bengal with a Muslim majority including Dhaka. This divided the population of over 70 million between West Bengal including Bihar and Orissa, which had a Hindu majority, and East Bengal. While Muslims gained prosperity, Hindus launched violent protests against the partition, seeing it as favoring Muslim progress. Their Swadeshi Movement included bombings and attacks that killed British and police.
