Nursing Informatics in Health Care

Introduction

One of emerging advanced nursing training is nursing informatics. According to (),

nursing informatics has become a critical area of advanced nursing practice. There are different

definitions used in description of nursing informatics. In Holden et al. (2018) view, nursing

informatics refer to integration of computer and information science in nursing by promoting

effective practices for generation, processing and management of relevant data for use in

developing knowledge useful in decision making. From definition, nursing informatics involve

gathering of data or information from documentations and clients to make informed decisions

(Christopherson, Troseth, & Clingerman, 2015). Gathering of information could be achieved

through research and studies to build on new knowledge and strategies for implementing nursing

interventions (Kleib & Olson, 2015). From the information gathered, a nurse is able to

implement evidence-based practice as an effective framework for nursing practice. Evidence-

based practice is implemented in line with collaborative care models to attain best practices in

nursing, research science and computerized technology integration for quality and safe care

practices and nursing interventions.

Nursing Informatics Effects on Nursing Staff

Advanced nursing education required for job description of nursing informatics is

describes the roles and responsibilities of informaticists. The informaticists ideally are involved

in utilization of evidence-based practice resources for practice continuation (Kleib & Olson,

2015). Nursing informatics professionals are required to be able to adequately interpret

information to enhance communication, information organization and alignment to nursing care

practice (Kleib, Simpson, & Rhodes, 2016). Therefore, nursing informaticists are responsible

integration of information in nursing process to create a connection between information

technology, healthcare and communication to improve patient-centric care approaches in care

delivery, diagnosis and treatment of diseases (Holden et al., 2018). The approach also enhances

implementation of effective holistic care and treatment interventions to protect the quality and

safety of patients.

There are several competencies required for informaticists for continued education

depending on entry level, practice thresholds and advancement that require a potential nursing

informaticists to acquire postgraduate studies before certification (Holden et al., 2018). The

evolving digital technologies, next generation sequencing, artificial intelligence and big data

analytics are all generating vast volume of data that is specific to particular patients, which could

help in personalization of care (Holden et al., 2018). With these emergence trend, the role of

nursing informaticists is diversifying from simple technology integration to concepts of

alignment of healthcare services based on patient-centric models, personalization of healthcare

services and integration of big data analytics in clinical setting for key decisions in diagnostic,

treatment and delivery of care (Christopherson, Troseth, & Clingerman, 2015). Nursing

informaticists require valuable information on knowledge for implementation of development

and implementation of nursing practice.

Impact of Full Nurse Engagement in Health Care Technology

With modernization and digitalization of healthcare systems, it is important to prioritize

commitment and efforts towards collection and analysis of healthcare data to help in decision

making (Christopherson, Troseth, & Clingerman, 2015). It is important to realize that nursing

informatics can help in advancing quality and safety through using nursing information derived

from research studies to formulate practice guidelines in evidence-based practice. However,

integration of nursing information in practice decisions is a complex process that require

strategic and interprofessional collaboration (Boyle, et al., 2019). Therefore, there are still

challenges that face nursing informatics in healthcare setting to enhance efforts for performance

improvement in safety and quality of care. This problem requires interventions that can bridge

the gap between clinical systems, information technology, financial systems, patient-centric care

practices and patient satisfaction (Kleib, Simpson, & Rhodes, 2016). Based on the above

realization, nursing informaticists must be prepared to adequately lead multidisciplinary teams

and train other nurses to link nursing practice to data-driven decisions.

The integration of evidence requires adequate preparation and involvement of nurses in

delivery of care by integrating valuable information for decision making. Individual and team-

based training is required to enhance efforts towards information-based decisions for

interdisciplinary teamwork in healthcare facilities (Holden et al., 2018). To properly implement

patient-centric care, there is need to re-evaluate the type of data required to guide decision

making and implementation protocols to enhance success, which could require adequate training

to healthcare workers (Kleib & Olson, 2015). Additional training is needed to interdisciplinary

teams to enhance integration of evidence-based practice based on information for guiding

decisions (Boyle, et al., 2019). Continued improvement of quality and safety of patient care and

other healthcare decisions proper training and interdisciplinary teams to advance patient

satisfaction.

Having identified the need for in-service training to all healthcare workers regarding

nursing informatics, it is important to structure an effective training strategy to enhance

interdisciplinary collaboration in data-driven care (Holden et al., 2018). This training could

involve proper and effective use emerging technologies, digital tools, and using these tools to

mine valuable data that can be useful in guiding decisions. For instance, effective computer

training is needed and data analytics tools for better alignment to making information-driven

decisions that has the capability to improve quality and safety of care (Kleib & Olson, 2015).

The training for the team and other professionals in the healthcare setting on safe and secure

practices in information technology can be critical in safeguarding data security and

confidentiality as required under the HIPAA (Boyle, et al., 2019). The training can help

healthcare workers to use data in decision making without compromising the confidentiality and

privacy of data due to more secure practices. To implement the training program for nursing

informatics, Kleib and Olson (2015) explains that the organization’s management and leadership

team can help in resource mobilization and funding of the training programs to improve

compliance to data security and confidentiality in healthcare systems.

Integration of these new approaches could help in review and assessment of emerging

technologies to evaluate how they can provide an effective ground for patient-centered care. The

in-service training required on informatics could applied from a collaborative environment with

required stakeholders like human resource department, pharmacists, nurses, physicians, APRNs

like Nursing Informaticists, shareholders, legal or compliance department and the Information

Technology department (Kleib, Simpson, & Rhodes, 2016). Collaborative approach can enhance

commitment to ensuring every aspect of healthcare service is put into consideration through

collaborative engagement in better information management to improve knowledge

development, new knowledge integration and improve overall nursing practice (Christopherson,

Troseth, & Clingerman, 2015). Cultural competence is required during the training to ensure that

the collaborative team involved has clear cross-cultural understanding for knowledge

development and planning. Effective communication is integral in implementation of the new

approach to collaboration for in-service training for teams involved in synthesis of knowledge

for evidence-based practice.

Additionally, involvement of nurses and interprofessional collaboration team in

information technology training and evidence-based practice could help in reducing the cost of

care due to increased efficiency and overall reduction in cost of operation (Kleib & Olson, 2015).

Therefore, the training aims at preparing nurses on continued education and cultural competence

in the framework for better tech savvy. The challenges faced by nurses that could compromise

data security and confidentiality can be addressed through effective interprofessional

collaborative teams geared towards improving the knowledge on proper use of information to

make clinical decisions. Though the evidence-based practices require data to make rational

decisions on clinical outcomes, it is important to ensure that the patient personal data is protected

in alignment with HIPAA policy (Kleib, Simpson, & Rhodes, 2016).

Therefore, preparation of nurses through training can help to achieve high clinical

outcomes for healthcare provider and overall performance of the healthcare systems

(Christopherson, Troseth, & Clingerman, 2015). The integration of nursing information into

practice is important in improving research and education, clinical practices, management

strategies, workforce productivity and mobilization of resources to offer valuable outcomes on

patient care (Kleib & Olson, 2015). The areas of nursing informatics that require adequate

training include offering core informatics training, specialized informatics skills to solve

problems, effective integration of telecommunication tools for enhancing communication, and

enhancing collaboration to advance the informatics (Holden et al., 2018). The in-service training

on nursing informatics result to well-informed nursing practice through collaboration to enhance

safety, quality, cost-effectiveness and rational decision-making practices that essential to advance

healthcare services.

Summary of Recommendations

The advancement in clinical practice resulted to emergence of nursing informatics. From

the evidence explained, it is important to identify in-service training of nurses and other

healthcare workers on security and confidentiality practices could increase sensitivity to safety of

patient data as required under the HIPAA policy that stipulates the confidentiality, privacy and

data security for patient’s protection from data breach or unauthorized access. The training

requires collaboration from interprofessional team to ensure that all those professionals involved

in delivery of care adequately use the informatics tools more responsibly and with minimal risks

to an unauthorized access. Proper training is important to nurses and other healthcare workers to

ensure they are appropriately equipped with skills and competences on evidence-based practice,

healthcare policies on data privacy and security, and overall delivery of care improvement plans.
