Hero Definition Essay

We are surrounded by heroes all the time. They are doing heroic deeds and changing peoples
lives for the better. Robert Downey Jr. once stated, "I think that we all do heroic things, but hero is not a
noun, it’s a verb." (Downey, 2018). Being a hero is a very powerful thing. Some people are naturally
heroes in some people’s lives. Air-Force pilot, Chelsey Sullenberger landed a big passenger plane on the
Hudson River, because of engine failure, not even one casualties or injuries on board. Sully did not only
do this incredible thing but he didn’t brag at all to the press or his loved ones. One of the passengers said
that Sully acted like it was "just another day at the office." This being one of the examples and many
more heroes can be someone who helps people that aren’t exactly able to help themselves. They do
more than their duties are entailed for. They always put others before themselves.

Heroes’ help people who are unable to help themselves. An example of this is, in Nepal, when a
parent does something against the law in Nepal the children of these people automatically go to prison
as well. A woman by the name of Pushpa Basnet became very aware of this problem. She decided to do
something to change this. As what caused her to want to do this, I wondered. She decided to go and visit
a prison where these children were held. She could not even stand to look and these children who were
suffering for a mistake that their parents made. She hated to see their lives being thrown away. So one
day she decided to give these kids a home. She took her home and transformed it into a day and night
care facility for theses kids. They could play, learn, eat, sing, and make new songs. Pushpa showed
amazing heroism by helping these kids who did not have parents who could give them a childhood that
they truly deserved. She did this without being asked, Pushpa did this out of the kindness of her heart.
Pushpa changed the lives of so many children for the rest of their lives by showing them the right way of
life. She saved them from a lifetime of sadness, wrong choices, and regret. The children that grow up in
prison have a life without love or friend end up making poor life decisions. Pushpa is helping stop this by
teaching the kids love and friendship and hard work by giving them opportunities outside of the prison.
Pushpa has helped shape people’s thoughts and perspectives from the people in her society and possibly

even people worldwide. I wonder where these kids would be and what terrible things would these kids
be doing if Pushpa never started helping?

Another amazing example of what a hero who helped someone who was very helpless is a guy
named Miguel, also known as coach Miguel. Coach Miguel was a wrestling coach. A kid by the name of
Isaiah Bird, who was one of Miguel’s kids he coached was born without legs. Isaiah was taken under the
wing of coach Miguel while he was just in kindergarten. Since that day Miguel has gotten Isaiah ready for
school, feds him breakfast and every day he encourages Isaiah to be better in life and even try wrestling.
Coach Miguel deeply believed in Isaiah, Miguel even stated that, “I hope for him to follow his dreams. I
hope for him to never change his personality and the way he is because he has an amazing, amazing
personality. He has no idea what changes he's making in other people, hopefully one day he can be a
motivational speaker. Maybe he can, you know, travel the world, and just show people that, you know
what, he did it and that they can do it, too.” (Francis, 2017). Coach Miguel was a great wrestling coach as
he was like a father to Isaiah. He helped give someone the gif of believing in himself

and being the best, he can. Who knows were Isaiah would have been without the help who knows were?
he would have been in his life? Coach Miguel helped Isaiah through his life and because of the
confidence he instilled in Isaiah; Isaiah became someone kids just like him look up to him. They look up
to how Isaiah has overcome all the struggles a kid with disabilities has to face. Isaiah is a hero to kids like
him because he gave them hope. Isaiah could not have done this without his personal hero Coach
Miguel.

Heroes can go above and beyond when it comes to their duties. An example of this is, a former
Language Arts teacher Ellen Stackable saw a problem occurring throughout her state. This problem was
that Oklahoma has the highest rate of females being incarcerated. For twenty-five years no one has done
anything to solve this problem just worsen this. Ellen started a nonprofit organization called Poetic
Justice in 2014. This was to help the women in the prison by teaching women in prison learn creative
writing lessons. While learning these lessons they write Ellen about the difficulties in their lives, with
their family issues, and anything else they want to write about. As Ellen learns about their lives she does
her best to help them learn to mediate, learn poetry and with that have lots of time practicing there
writing skills. Ellen is happy with the work she is doing for these women, she says, “When people read
what these women have written, their minds will be blown away." (Dunn, 2018). She shows her heroism
is a unique way while doing something she loves. This might seem like something so little to these
women. But, to them this is something that can change their lives for the better. Ellen is a hero and a

great person to look up to because she is always looking for something to help another even when
maybe it’s not “convenient”.

Anyone of us can be or become a hero. We might not even realize we already are a hero to
someone. But all it takes is to help or inspire someone who is helpless. Someone who thinks of others
before themselves. We need to move past the stereotypical definition of what it means to be a hero, and
into a new light of what a true hero is. A hero is someone who thinks of others and how it will affect
future people in the situation nit just one person but others who are struggling in this world. We can all
be a hero it just takes one good act. One good act at a time can change a world.
