MARRIAGE PRACTICES AS
A RESULT OF CULTURE.

Panliligaw And
Pamamanhikan
Traditionally, the period of panliligaw (courtship) has a
man woo his partner to eventually win her hand in
marriage. Young men, especially in rural areas, would do
this by way of harana (serenade), where they would sing

pamamanhikan, where the groom-to-be lays out his
intentions for marriage, in front of her family members. Once
the woman’s family gives their blessing, plans for the
wedding will naturally follow, from the budget to the guest
list.

Despedida de soltera
Next comes what we call the “despedida de soltera” which is traditionally
another pre-wedding event organized by the bride's family to celebrate
their daughter saying goodbye to her single life.
Owning to the American influence, this is now known as a stag party
for the groom and bridal shower for the bride.

The Wedding Attire

The bride traditionally wears a Filipiniana or Maria Clara wedding gown,

which is a more complex and dressy version of the baro't saya, while the
man wears Barong Tagalog, which is a sheer fabric garment made of
indigenous materials that is worn untucked over a white singlet and black
pants. Today, however, the modern bride commissions a couturier to create
an all-white wedding gown in the style of the American bride. Many grooms
still wear Barong Tagalog, tuxedos, or suits.
The Wedding Ceremony
Couples must apply for a marriage license, attend seminars and
counselling, visit local civil registrar, solemnize marriage in
presence of two witnesses, release marriage license and NSO
certificate, and meet parish priest for church weddings.

The Reception

couple’s eternal love. Other Western traditions have since been
integrated in the reception, including the bouquet and garter
toss, the cutting of the cake, as well as ceremonial toasts from
well-wishing guests.
